Hi

My Aircon needs a recharge (1990 Jap TT) and I am being told that the kind of gas I [may] need is now illegal in the UK/USA/EU is this the truth?

Can you use R134A with the standard compressor as above or will I need to source a compressor from a post 1994 car?

Cheers.

Andy,

Cant tell u if R134a will work but Jeffs doing a R12 to R24 recharge for 110 quid at the moment, if thats any use to ya.

I pretend to work, they pretend to pay me!

They have a compatible replacement - R416 i think. Got mine done year before last and it still works great. There was only 30psi of pressure left with the old stuff and they are not supposed to refill you with it - more likely they cant get hold of it any more and the aircon guys stash any supplies it for cars that just cant use anthing else without major mods - basically old Astons and the like.

Maybe if you had a lot of refridgerant left then a top up might be possible but not officially permitted - as long as the aircon guy has a stash of the old stuff!

R134A cant be used without mods - its not as efficient and the pressures are different - experts can correct this if not 100% accurate

Out of curiosity what did Nissan fill thme with when they left the showroom, R12?

R12 was used in most cars up to about 10 yrs ago when thay went over to R134a

the problem with mixing is not with the gas - that can be evacuated. its with the oil used. the 2 types ar not mixable - R12 oil is mineral based, R134a oil is synthetic.

put R134a in an old R12 system & the old oil in the system turns to jelly & doesnt mix.

theres a few different refrigerants that are compatible with the old oil

R49 is the one i have listed from a supplier thats on my desk at the moment :)

the only problem is it costs twice as much as R134a :(

Just to clarify the proceedure a bit on zeds after 1993/94 the refridgerant is R134r prior to this all zed are filled with R12 the two are not compatable as said by Paul c because of lubricant differences.

1) With an earlier zed (R12) first recovery of the old R12 is done in to a sealed container that is disposed of later under strict guidelines.

2) Then the sytem is filled with an inert gas so a timed pressure test can be done to check for leaks.

3) following a succesful test a vacuum pump is applied to the system to not only dry out any moisture but to aid refilling .

4) A measured amount of MINERAL lubricating oil is added to the system along with an electronically weighed amount of RS24 refridgerant.

Not a hard proccess but a bit time consuming, later cars are easier as no recovery of the R12.

Typical cost is £110 to £120 for earlier cars and £60 to £70 for later cars

Hope that helps,

The Autokool guy in central Scotland came out to me and did it to my 92 Z in the car park at the office summer before last - cost £80. He spent a couple of hours checking things and told me he put synthetic oil in as well as a flourescent die in case any leaks did turn up as he had a lot of trouble trying to inspect the piping in the dark packed bowels of a zed. He also got well puzzled with the two stage electric fan and the engine driven one and thought the leccy was broke because he just couldnt make it come on - it wasnt warm enough at the time

Anyway it works and still works - so does the leccy fan that does come on in this weather when stuck in traffic with aircon on.

Same guy just done my other car with R134a - £60.

LOOKING AT ALL THIS TECH STUFF SET ME WONDERING, DO I HAVE AIR CON? I KNOW IT SOUNDS STUPID, SWITCH IT ON & THERE YOU GO!

ALL THIS ABOUT YOUR GAS STUFF & I'M NOW QUESTIONING IF I GOT AIR CON.

91 Z AUTO WITH AUTO AIR CON ON DASH! SO IS THAT IT I HAVE AIR CON. HOW LONG BEFORE I FEEL COLD IT GOES DOWN TO 10 & UP TO 40!

AFAIK they all have A/C

if you set the temperature below ambiant temperature then the A/C should cut in to cool the incoming air.

set it to 10 & it will blow cold air all the time

Thanks for info

where is the air con unit situated ? only out of curiosity of course.

R12 has screw service valves - R134a has bayonet types ;)

hope the spelling's ok for you :D

it should also tell you on a blue sticker on the slam panel, what type of gas and how much needs to go in.
