problem one!- My Z is fitted with a SERPI STAR alarm any idea as to where the control box & fuse box are. Centrl locking not working with it & it should!

No 2 - Ive developed what appears to be a big end rattle on excelleration! Oil pressure OK. and it goes away as auto goes to top gears. Just completed 450 miles this weekend. problem not got worse or engine not seized yet. could it be cam belt ? I'm not a mechanic! Maybe take to garage. Tick over ok too if that helps. thankful for any ideas.

cant help with your problems, sorry.

Did i see you around folkestone yesterday afternoon, a red zx (h plate?)

Hi Arthur,

I am not a tech guy but it seems your Propshaft or Universal Joint is causing the rattling mate.

Is your Z an NA or TT ?

"Ammar"

The control box is very likely to be fitted in the centre console somewhere, it's about the size of a fag packet. It should be securely attached because it has tilt sensor in it I believe.

Central locking is a feature of that alarm, but it may not be enabled, because they installer would need to add an additional motor for the passenger door.

Could your your big end rattle be pinking/detenation ?!?

My Z's an auto.

OK! I can live with my alarm & c/lock not working.

Garage says engine sound NOT GOOD! They say not big ends more like Little Ends! S!!!, b!!!!!ks, f!!k!

So any suggestions welcome about what to do next?

Desperate or what!

Should I scrap it? Swap it? Get a ford(no way!) get a life! or get a wife! Any one close by that would like to help! I only did 100mph last night! Go for it!:( :( :( :( :( :(

Look in the centre console - remove the radio etc and it will probably be in there somewhere.

Little ends exremely unlikely. I've never ever heard of worn little ends - piston end of the conrods on any engine. Maybe on 600000 mile taxi!

Unfortunately a big end bearing can be the first to suffer when you have any oil starvation even for a few seconds. Did you ever let it go low and also give it a high rpm thrashing recently?

Get another opinion. A good experienced mechanic should be able to tell if it is a big end.

Big end knock tends to quieten when you load up the engine at low rpm and knock away when revved or under light load. Fits what you say about going quiet when in top gear. Best not to drive it if a big end is suspected as you'll only chew up the crankshaft journal affected.

Maybe if not too damaged you might be able to get new bearing shells in by dropping the sump.

Best of luck

Who you having look at it in Folkestone?

Is it Graham at KAP?

Tim

If the big ends were worn enough to become audible you'd see a drop in oil pressure wouldn't you ?

Hi WillieO

Thnx for advice, fits wat u say. Garage said big or little end.

Billing out 4 me in Z then.

Can big ends be done dropping sump on Z then? Sounds better than engine out!

Not a boy racer! Engine can cope with 3/4 thuo rpm all day.

Hi TT Tim

KAP looked at it this pm. Not sure who looked at it can say MARTIN workshop manager said could be big ends.

Tinkywinky hi, oil pressure drops almost 2 zero takes alot of revs to get oil pressure to 50.

Hi M8, Graham is Workshop manager there and a m8 of mine. From the described symptoms it does sound like Big ends. I'm not sure if they can be done in situ, you need to talk to Duff or Aaron or someone with extensive knowledge. I do know that the shells are graded so you'll need to get the old ones out to see what you need.

There's also a jap specialist garage in Ashford, although I haven't personally used them I believe Darren (he's in Fk'stone too) has and was complimentary about them, might be worth a try if yoiu don't fancy Nissan hourly rate.

Oh, btw what colour is yours? Not a recent aquision in white is it?

Fame! Fame!

Ahem.. Anyhow, moving on..

We've had this discussion before, and I was firmly of the belief that you couldn't do the shells with the engine in the car, because the subframe fouls the sump..

Having had my engine out up at Duffs, and having dropped the subframe to get it back in the car... I think we are (Duff and myself) both now of the opinion that you could do shells in the car by supporting the engine on a crane/something and dropping the subframe down off it - I think you'd get maybe 4-6" of drop on the subframe, which should give you the access you need to do it..

It'd be a mare of a job working over your head to do something like that, though, IMHO, and if they have gone, you might be better off investigating properly..

If you've a garage with a lift, unbolt the subframe, prop shaft and gearbox mount, disconnect all the pipework and electricals and then lift the car off the engine.. Or just drop the subframe a little and pull the engine & box out as one, then strip the engine and have a good look..

Chances are if your big ends are gone, something caused it - probably oil starvation, so you'll want to change the oil pump and check everything else out at the same time (cam journals, etc). Much easier out of the car..

Unless you want a 'quick fix' of course :)

HTH,

Aaron

Hi Aaron, thanks for the advice.

Dont want a quick duff joby done on my Z!

I do have a garage for the car, with no space around & no lift!

My expertise is not with cars !

Have spoken to a guy called Justin at TORQUE IC in Ashford he is going to look at it for me. Sounded like a good Knowlegable chap.

Get the car up to him week Monday. He says then look at the options!

See you Sat?
