Anyone know if Castrol Magnatec is available in 10-50 ?

Costco sell the Magnatec 10-40 for about £14.

I bought some Valvilene 5-50 the other week, but Im reluctant to use it, thinking it is a bit too thin. I have heard of extra noise and oil leaks with 5w oils, are these true ?

Thanks

John

use proper synth, not magnatec.

Castrol RS 10/60.

If you change your oil every 3 or 4k, surely there is not a shred of evidence to back any arguements for using fully synthestic, except to put money in the pockets of the thieving oil companies.

I work 4 Shell - better oils give better performance (better lubrication) and they produce less harmful chemical species. I see your point that regular changing of oil means that the oil doesn't have much change to degrade - but it still does to some degree. Better is better, even if u change the oil every 1k miles.

An engine like the one in a 300ZX should run better on a fully synth and rememeber oil in a 300zX gets hotter than in a 'normal' car - which equals more degradation.

Oils have to cope with the following - dirt from air (if u have a performance filter, more dirt gets in the oil

Acid build up which rapidly oxidises oil (H2O +gases from combustion)

Wear metals

Shear stresses

Thermal stresses

synth is better, end of argument.

I guess when you spend £40 or £50 on 4 or 5 litres of oil you have a need to believe that it is doing your engine some good, similar to death - you believe that its all worth it because better things are to come.................but is it all false hope ??

John

I pay £25 for 4 litres of castrol RS, and have seen proof that synth causes less wear on bearing shells.

I use mineral oil to run my engines in because it doesn't lubricate as well as synth allowing rings to bed in without causing bore glaze.

This is industry std practice.

Maybe I am more fussy, but you spend good money on mods, insurance, petrol etc. An extra £10 every quarter isn't going to break the bank is it.

BTW Makro sell Magnatec 10/40 (don't think they do a 10/50, only a thinner one) for about £10+vat when they have it on offer.

I guess £25 for the RS is a good investment, I will have to look around Derby for someone who sells it at that price......Halfords want way too much for it. I cannot even find a 10-50 oil so far

John

Part of the arguement against semi synth is that you get buildup on the turbo journals due to the high heat... Go for synth or your engines coming out when the turbos need replacing ;)

Um, can I just point out that John has an NA, and therefore no turbo journals? :D :D

Sorry, had to be done..

Quite apart from that, I'd still run synth, have done in all my cars - just because it lubes everything better (cam journals, crank bearings, etc etc) and survives the toxic environment better, especially as we all know how poor the breather system is on a Z..

Ok so you have to lay out for 4 pots in one go, but it's not like it not going to get used is it? perhaps go to Nissan and buy 4 filters too so you have a year's supply. :)

I can see using fully synth for about £25 a time, I will look around this week for a good price of a fully synth, 10-50 or better. The Valvoline 5-50 fully synth that I bought a couple of weeks ago I might use to pour through the engine after I have drained the oil, as sort of a flush.

Is anybody out there actually using a 0-40 (Mobil 1) ?

Surely it is way too thin for a hot engine like the z32 in the middle of summer ?

Cheers

John

Mine used to seep when I used Mobil 1.

Great oil, but just too thin for mid-life engines ! :(
