Help required please.

I now own my dream of twelve years, an imported t/t 2+2.

I have recently performed an oil and filter change (Castrol RS 10/60), and am now noticing the auxillary fan is coming on earlier than previously, although the temperature gauge is not showing an excessive amount.

I've trawled the threads for information, but would like further advice please. There is no loss of coolant at all, but I have had to top up the level. I have found the top hose in to the radiator to be hot but not pressurised, and the left hand side (facing the engine) to be hotter than the right. I am unable to "force" any further water in to the system though.

Anyone any ideas?

All help gratefully received,

Simon:confused:

Wiggle the left hand side temp sensor, it'll stop ;)

Sounds like a knackered temp sensor or just a dirty connection, very common :)

Further info:

Tried cleaning up the connections as suggested.

Having run the engine for a bit longer now the temperature gauge does rise above normal, so I am definately overheating. Anyone able to point at a possible cause, and if it's not something I'm able to solve, can anyone recommend someone local to me (Hemel Hempstead) to assist?

Thanks,

Simon

Simon,

Just be aware that the stock temp gauge is crap. It will sit at "normal" temp and if it overheats will suddenly shoot up to max in a matter of seconds giving no real warning. It might be worth considering some aftermarket gauges.

Could be a few things from an airlock in the system to a jammed thermostat or bad water pump (although I've never seen a water pump stop pumpinig, just leak so doubt that one). Run the engine for 10 minutes with the heater on full blast (set to 40 deg), stop the engine, let it cool for a while, then check to see if it needs any more water. If it doesn't, run the engine with the rad cap off, sometimes that's the only way of getting airlocks out - don't run it for too long though if it is overheating ;) If not an airlock, then probably a jammed thermostat. Not too bad to replace - fan off, rad out, bottom metal hose coming from centre of engine off, then you'll see the thermostat. Couple of hours work even if you take your time ;)

Simon, FYI

The auxillary fan switches on at 105deg C and the goes to double speed at 110deg C.

This means that your coolant temperature is way above what it should be.....generally 85-90deg C

As mentioned above, the stock gauge generally stays central for a wide temperature range. ie 80-110deg C

So according to that if your temperature reaches 100ºC its no real big deal if the fan only comes on at 105ºC

I think 100deg C is high considering normal temp is 85-90max.

Don't know why Nissan left it so long before switching the auxillary fan on!

My coolant temperature rarely rises above 84deg C even under high boost.

Have you got an aftermarket radiator, as mine lately has been getting up into 90ºC when it usually never got that high.

Stuart,

The only upgrade I have for the cooling system is a solid lower pipe to the radiator.

Are you using a lightened crank pulley?

Maybe check the radiator cap as these can sometimes play up.

My thanks to all for your advice.

Particularly you Andy, I was suffering from an air lock. All OK now (hopefully).

Simon.

Another thing to think about is , have you been putting water into the rad via the rad cap or the reservoir bottle, you should check the rad cap water first!
