I'm planning an ECU upgrade and electronic boost control install. Does anyone have experience of the Powerchip in terms of performance and reliability?. I know from searching the forum that JWT and SE's come highly recommended and the Superchip is best avoided. Problem is:

1. Can't locate a JWT supplier in the UK. Advised that even if I do, it's probably cloned or not set for UK fuel!

2. Need someone in or around the London area to undertake the installation and finely tune on a rolling road. SE are localish but understand they don't have a RR.

A JWT, set for the UK and tuned on a dyno would be ideal. Am I asking for too much or can someone recommend some options/people/places that can supply and do the necessary work?

Thanks

No JWT chip is made for the UK.

SE chips are made for UK unleaded,

Japanese chips such as Mines are made for 100ron fuel which they use over there.

If you want a custom made chip on a rolling road you will have to pay for it, as they are expensive.

I found a place who specialise in doing such a thing for the 300ZX. However they where in Belgium.

Stuart

SE will make you a custom chip tuned for your car if that's what you want. They book time at a rolling road to do the fine tuning. I can't remember what the all-in charge is, but I think it's something like 400 quid, which is way cheaper than buying a (exchange!) JWT ECU... 1000+ dollars last look. Hopefully mine will be tearing up that rolling road this Friday :D

Hmmm, Belgium, could be bit of a drive.....

Thanks guys. The SE option is becoming more appealing. I'll have to call them to discuss further. Also discovered that TDI in Essex do a HKS piggyback upgrade to the existing ECU. Good gains but prices are high and I don't know what other peoples' experience is with this particular item. Any takers?

51x - Please let us know how you get on on Friday, particularly if you think the RR is worthwhile and whether or the car feels any better.

Stuart - Always wanted to ask what dials you have. They're funtastic!

carnt you buy a AFR in car controller for the jap cars instead of having them chiped there a different chip to the uk ones arnt they

(so ive been told)

Someone please correct me if im wrong??

As soon as it's back you can bet I'll be on here gurgling on about how fantastic it is... hopefully! It's not just a matter of making the car feel better - I've had an engine rebuild / cams / bigger injectors, so it's an absolute necessity.

What mods have you had done to your car Shahid? I wouldn't expect a dramatic difference if the car's still pretty much standard. Best to go the standard (?) route... filter and exhaust, more boost (maybe with a boost controller like you mentioned), then map around that.

  • Author

I've pretty much stuck to the standard mod route to try to achieve 400 BHP and 14psi. So far, thats included an exhaust, induction, uprated turbos and dump valves. The brakes and suspension have also been uprated so I thought the natural next progression would be to up the boost by way of a chip and boost controller. So, once this is done, I guess the only way to see the output and ensure everythings working in harmony across all bands is to stick the Zed on a rolling road.

Shahid,

you have been a busy boy, no wonder you havent been posting much.

:)

Hey Jock, how you doing? Yep, have been busy and I must say, a lot poorer from all the efforts! Haven't been posting much but have spent a hell of a lot of time searching and learning from the forums. Some really excellent advice and info.

Is your 99 front done? Post some pics. We'll have to sort out a mini meet once my car's back on the road.

My front end (its not finished yet tho:( ) been caught up myself with a speedo problem, and hoping to do the interior this week.

Also just found hole in my exhaust :(

BTW, on the subject of JWT chips - I beleive these are mapped for 91 or 92 Octane fuel (probably 91 in Cali)..

US 92 Octane fuel is, if I recall correctly, about the same as our 97 RON fuel (AFAIK they use MON and we use RON for our numbering standards)..

So it kinda is mapped for UK fuel..

However, JWT do, undoubtedly map very rich - even the US boys admit this, which is why they have fallen out of favour on TTnet a little..

Anyway.. :D

I believe that JWT program the chip rich as increasing the fuel helps to keep the 'combustion/pistons cooler'. Its a safety measure to help stop the engine going bang on strong boost, when providing a generic chip for a range of unseen Zs. SE tune on the actual car, I believe, so presumably can individually tune for that car and thus run a leaner mix more safely.

Shahid, is your car silver/platinum and in Kingston? Fyi, I have a JWT.

Best regards

Geoff

Geoff m8 - are you a psychic or what? You're right, it's silver and in a garage in Kingston having some work done. Do you use the same garage? I've seen a few Zed's in there over the past few weeks, a blue, a red and a Cobalt blue one with a full strozek (sp!) kit on it. Are one of these yours?

So, do you recommend the JWT and where did you get it?

Yep, I have to own up - mine is the kitted car. I thought I recognised the spec/mods, saw the turbo post and Croydon reference, Dr Watson!!!

I have yet to drive it with the JWT chip, but I decided to go the "safe" route and ordered the JWT direct from Jim Wolf in the States. Quite expensive with postage and all the taxes paid. I was a little alarmed at some of the stories I saw on various forums, and decided that I could forego a few potential additional bhp to remain with a safe and widely used chip.

Having said that, I now know of enough members who are happily using other chips to say that you should consider the others as well (although I have not seen anybody have a good word for the 300ZX Superchip - so perhaps you should avoid this one?).

The following link is an interesting read - skip down to the English first.

http://www.twinturbo.de/jwt.php

If you use the AltaVista translate of the German, it mentions an experience with Superchip.

Ciao, Geoff

Interesting article Geoff. If you don't mind me asking, who fitted or is going to fit the chip for you. More importantly, when's that monster of your's gonna hit the tarmac? Mine should hopefully be out by the weekend!

Hi Shahid, Because my car was going to be off the road for some time I sent my ECU to JWT in California, where it was socketed, and both the stock and upgraded chip returned with the original ECU. As you can see in the following link, JWT also do an exchange basis, but I liked the idea of keeping my original ECU.

You may want to talk to some of the other guys about other options?

My car: Although Braba keeps on telling me "2 weeks", I think he likes having it in his shop and talking about it. With your mods I was hoping your car could take its' place, so releasing mine!! This sounds like a good strategy to me - what do you think? (You don't have to reply).

If okay, I may send you a PM about a couple of things (e.g. 3G & Porterfields, and I hear you are interested in an engine oil cooler)?

Cheers, Geoff

i have a powerchip in mine seems to work well but most of the power comes form the boost jets but if you are running 14psi you have already have something upping your boost witch is not a good thing without a chip as it shod allow moor fuel in and adjust the timing so you can safely increase the boost. a boost controller would be a good idea as they can stop boost spikes this is when you get over boost not good for the engine. Also if you go over 14psi you my have to uprate your clutch as it my slip anyway hope this helps. if you wont a powerchip go here they do the best price http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/

Thanks Sid.

Running on standard boost at the moment. Looking to increase it to 14psi by way of an ECU upgrade and boost controller. What kind power output did you achieve with the Powerchip?

  • Author

Hey Geoff

I think you're right. Braba does like to talk about your car, but who can blame him. And as for my humble offering replacing yours, no competition I'm afraid. In fact, you should get a big fat discount from them for all the free promotion/advertising you've done for them!! You'll have to post some pics on the forum when the car's out. Feel free to PM me or give me a buzz on 07956 519199 anytime in the evening - have a couple of questions for you too.

Cheerz

Hi shahid seems to have made a difference but hard to tell as i did the de-cat and induction kit at the same time and I did not put the bleed valves they supplied in, as i am waiting for my mate to get me a blitz boost controller from the US

Hope this helps Sid
