I have a 1992 300zx import n/a, and plan on doing on oil change this weekend. I was going to use Castrol Magnatec semi synthetic, but I saw some Valvolene 5-50 fully synthetic for £16.99 and bought it. Do you think this oil is suitable ?

Thanks

John

shud be OK -check you manual tho' Fully synth is best for a Z. If u don't know the condition of the engine, it may be prudent to change the oil after ~1000 miles as the synth oil could dislodge any sludge/dirt that has built up and u don't want this ruining your expensive engine. Oil is a LOT cheaper than engine parts -remember that !!

Magnatec is nothing special - just marketed well. ;)

Thuis bit from that website is actually wrong -

"Synthetic oils are entirely concocted by chemists wearing white lab coats in oil company laboratories. "

-----------> Synthetics are produced from refining and chemical treatmentss of refined mineral oils. All oils used in cars come from crude oil originally. Only the additives are 100% manmade/synthetic. I shud no - I work for Shell

;)

This is confirmed later in the article - bad choice of words I think.

I thought fully synth had 3 out of the 5 base dopes synthtically made (altered) whereas semi has 2 or less and pure mineral has no man made dopes, only refined.

Oooooooh look below  \/ \/ \/ \/

Thanks everyone,

Semi synth was used by the previous owner, but is the viscosity of 5-50 ok ? I was concerned with the '5' part.

Thanks

All are refined - not sure where u got that info ??

5 shud be OK- it refers to low temp startup. It's on the low side tho' but prolly OK (don't sue me if it casues probs) so long as u don't rev high from cold (shudn't do that neway !!)

Umm, i said:

which means...

OIL IS refined i.e. not crude oil :)

- mineral oil, has only refined base dopes

- Semi has 1 or 2 out of the fives base dopes chemically altered (snythetic), but obviously all dopes are refined.

- full synth has 3 out of the 5 base dopes chemically altered.

Are we ok with that one.

Ive tried crude oil in my car, but with all the lumps of bitumen and shit in it, it didnt work too well?!
