Greetings fellow Zed Heds from Sunny Kent. I've stumbled upon this excellent forum while browsing for bits and pieces for my Zed.

I wondered if anyone knew of some decent experts on 300's in and around my/your area? I've been ripped off severely several times and, having spent about 30K on this car, decided I should get some contacts that I can rely on.

I have a few problems, the most annoying of which is with the brakes. 2 Callipers, 2 Discs and 4 brake pads later and I still get severe wobble on the steering wheel when breaking from reasonably high speed. Other problems include needing some welding done and tuning my new shiny Technics turbo's :-)

Well, thanks for reading!

Hi Ice,

I am sure we would all like to see a few pictures of your car. 30k must provide a mean machine?

I have seen a number of recommendations for "Darren" a really good mechanic in Kent (possibly Dartford area?). I think it would be worth a little travel.

I haven't got any details, but I am sure one of the other guys will give you the contact details (or try the forum "search").

Good luck,

Geoff

your wobble under braking could be your tension rod bushes...

don't know if you've tried this yet

ZX-ICE - always nice to see new members. Don't worry about the angry people on here, their behaviour is seasonal and will soon go.

As for the wobble, this is something that a lot of people have and do suffer with, including myself. My discs and pads are less than one and a half years old and all my calipers have been overhalled, however, the wobble still remains to a certain extent. I have had the front tension rod bushes changed without much improvement.

One thing that I would recommend you check, is that the wheel bearing on all 4 corners are tightened correctly. Even if you don't feel any play by hand, check with a torque wrench and see if that makes any difference. It did for me and now at least 75% of my brake judder has gone from the tightening of just one bearing. The other 3 are due to be done very soon.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm not particularly mechanically minded so I need to have the car done for me generally. The 30K has been mainly spent on keeping the car on the road (two new engines, 4 new turbo's (now uprated to Turbo Technics with control & timer etc. etc.)

I'm also eating front tyres. I had the track rods replaced last time but am managing to go through fronts in about 6000miles? Back one's, replaced at the same time, are perfect.

I guess what I need is someone who will do the work without charging me Nissan prices or worse, ripping me off and not doing the work properly. The money, by the way, was also spent on a 125db sound system hence ice :-)

Thanks,

I-C-E

HI zx-ice and all on this forum. I have just recently bought my Z and have been looking for a good place to service the car etc .. as I am not really mechanically minded, although I expect to learn quite a lot in the time I have the car.

I can recommend the following person who is in the Fordcombe area.

His name is Graham and can be contacted on 01892 740006.

I hope this helps you out

Good afternoon Mr ice ...

I'm not a million miles away, in Bearsted just outside Maidstone. Welcome aboard.

The Darren that Geoff refers to is Darren Higbee ... he has a tremendous reputation, and was once european Nissan mechanic of the year or some such accolade. Although, I've never used him myself, he comes highly recommended.

He's now the chief mechanic at Nissan Aylesford (Birchwood - 01622 716777), I think, and can be reached there. AFAIK he's the only mechanic there that you'd want to work on your 300 though ;).

Btw, there's usually a Kent or Essex meet, once every month or so, so look out on the events forum, and we'll see you there!

CheerZ,

JB.

Wobbling of the steering wheel at highish speeds is usually caused by play in the steering rack or warped discs/flange in my opinion.

If braking and wobbling, then you brake much harder, does it still wobble? If not it is probably the rack. Hard to explain but if you imagine slight play in the rack, when you brake the wheels wobble side to side. If you brake harder they lock pointing in or out.

Ofcourse might not be the case but looks like everything else has been suggested.

Hi ICE

Go on give us some pics of that turbo and that ICE

It's allways good for the rest of us to have something to aspire too...LOL

Scoobydooo

I am in Tun Wells too and also use Graham Darrell Sportcars in Fordcombe.

They specialise in Grey imports but seem to know what they are doing with Z's.

No complaints.
