might have found myself a nice 300, a lad on the sxoc told me that his brother was selling his, (from scotland somewhere)

ive seen some pics and it is a very nice looking car, however, its an automatic and the gear box has gone, the lad has bought all the kit needed to convert it to a manual, and these bits are at the z centre in nottingham.

can anyone tell me when a auto has been converted to a manual is there any difference between that and a factory made manual, ie bhp, etc.

the lad wants good money for the car, and i must admit it is a tidy thing, just this conversion thats worrying me......

The cam profile and turbo A/R ratio are both different on an auto engine compared to the manual, however the power output is essentially the same - and some people have said that a converted car actually has a better midrange pickup than an original manual..

I've ben told you retain the higher torque from the auto turbo's (or cam profiles?) but have the beauty of the manual box......sounds almost too good to be true?

It's perhaps better to spend a bit more money up-front for a nice car, though the thing that'd do it for me is a service history - particularly oil changes. Most of the people on this site change their oil more regularly than their underwear (I've now done 5000 miles in my Calvins) and it's for good reason - Turbos are pricey objects!

Russ.

Have a look at this old thread, quite a bit of info on the subject. Hehe, it's from the days when auto and manual cars could be discussed in the same thread without it degenerating into a free-for-all ;)

Also, do a forum search for "auto manual conversion" - the subject's come up a few times in the past and there's a fair bit of info in the archives.

this car has got service history, and recently had a £1500 60k service done on it, it has a few mods, nothing drastic, but he says about £2k of mods done to it, inc fibre glass replacement rear spoiler cos the standard one was cracking (the new one is the same as the standard one, autometer boost gauge and volt meter on pillar, lowered, HKS exhaust from cat back with 4.5" tail pipe either side, hks induction kit, windows professionally tinted (mild tint), clear back lights, different front bumper, blitz dual boost controller......

the only thing is it needs this gearbox sorting out, which he hasnt got round too yet.

if it wsant for the gearbox i'd a prob snapped it off him, cos the rest of the car sounds lovely, ive seen some piccs of it, its black, with black leather trim, and looks a very nice car.

but how can i go see it if it isnt running to make my mind up??

he says i can have it slightly cheaper if i can sort out getting it to nottingham.......

hmmm, im talking myself into this one here!!! the 300 bug is in me and i want one now!!!!!!!!!

"steps back, takes a breath to calm down"

what do you reckon???

You can't part with any money without being able to drive it/see it running......as much as you like it, I'd walk away dude. Who says what the engine is like????

my thoughts exactly james, i'll have to speak to him, if hes as confident that it is as good a car as he says then he'll have no problems getting it fixed before i look at it and decide!!

How much does he want for it ?.

Have you seen 300z's car. That's up for sale ?

once its done he wanted £5K for it, his brother who is on the sxoc where im also on(from when i had my 200sx) said he'd take £4.5K

i havent seen the car itself, just pics of it.

i've spoke to him on the phone and he's gonna get the work done, then i'm gonna have a look at it

That sounds like the best thing to do.....wait till the conversion has been done and go check it out!

my last question on this point is

am i better of getting this car (if it passes my inspection!) which was an automatic converted to a manual, or am i better finding another manual from factory 300..

How long is a piece of string?

It is impossible to answer your question! You can't generalise and say 'converted autos are better than original manuals' cos that one might be a pile of sh1te.

hmmmm, i thought that would be the answer, so basically, if both cars are 'minters' but one is standard manual, the other is converted, other than the slight differences, ie, slightly smaller turbo, then its really down to the price of both cars, cos they would both be as good as each other?

nice one.

now to wait while this work is done on the auto one, it really does look a nice car, and has plenty of paperwork.

the work is getting done by luke at the z centre in nottingahm, he is also going to give the car a going over to make sure it aint a dog, does anyone have any experience of this lad, is he a member on here???

yeah ive had a look through at his web site, and as he specializes in this vehicle then he would know his stuff!

nice one

Yep that will be my car then.

Hope you got the pics of my bro OK. There are more pics in the rides section. The reason I`m selling is that I now have too many cars. See pic in the rides for my other babies!!:D

Unfortunately the black 911 and the 300 has to go for the 993 Turbo (which is the daddy!!)

Ronnie

yeah i got the pics off ya bro mate, looks a VERY nice car, hope you understand though that i cant buy a car, esp one like this without hearing it running and having a drive of it first.

tonnie tells me that youve sacked off the possibility of making it a manual, and your just gonna put a auto box in it, let me know what you decide, i was really after a manual, yours seems like a very nice car, looked after and all that, but (theres always a damn BUT!! ) i would love to say to you,

get the work done, i'll definatley have it off you
but i know i cant...

however though, if you are that confident that the car is a minter, and luke at nottingham would give it a look over and give it a good clean bill of health, with the manual gearbox in it, as long as it got a clean bill of health i would say that i would buy it from you, it is exactly what i'm looking, just not a manual!!!!

let me know how you get on!:D

hows it coming along mate?????

any nearer it being ready so's i can have a look??

as ive said it is everything im looking for (apart fron auto, but everything else is right) so am still interested:D

Hello Mike

I`m afraid its going slow. Its going to take me a while to get her up and running. I just dont have any time off work at the moment to get her sorted. Will keep you updated anyway.

Ronnie

ok mate, cheers, i'm not gonna have all my finances sorted till early next week at the latest, have got most of it now, just need some extra overtime then jobs a good'un, come next weekend i'm gonna start making a move and searching on auto trader etc for some, if yours is ready by then i'll be coming to see you, my main problem is the distance i'm gonna have to travel to look at them, theres none for sale locally that i'm interested in.

but distance is no object, though not gonna buy the first one i see just cos i've travelled best part of 200 miles to view.

like i say mate, keep me updated and we'll take it from there, if i sort something else out in the meantime i'll let you know,

cheers

mike
