I did a diagnostic test on my ecu today and it came up with a detonation sensor circuit error. I'm getting normal boost and I remember someone telling me, or reading somewhere, that it might have something to do with the avc-r that I had fitted. Something to do with the ecu would not recognize the sensor or something. Does anyone know coz I'm getting a little worried???

Cheers

Vijay,

Do an ECU reset, drive it around and then run another diag. sess. See if you're still getting it! If so then crap your trousers, don't drive too hard and hope that your internals(engine) are not too badly charred! Only joking mate, not likely to be anything bad provided you've caught it in time.

what's the score here. is it get it down to the garage straight away, or can I still drive it on Sat???

Vijay

it means that the sensor is not functioning, that is all.

can you actually hear any detonation ?

if not, and you are using super unleaded, then i doubt you will have any trouble.

you could always put some octane booster in to make sure you dont get any detonation

other than that, even if the detonation sensor was working correctly, you still wouldnt go into safety boost due to the disconnected solenoid valves

if you cant hear any detonation, i wouldn't worry yourself too much, i personally dont think its anything drastic, and personally i would drive my car in your situation, but it's up to you

you could always give Darren a call to help put your mind at rest

Code 34 on the ECU means there's been a fault with the detonation sensor.

It doesn't automatically mean that the engine was actually detonating.

The detonation-sensor, or actually the wires to it are prone to fail, because they are in a very hot area near the engine (the wires become brittle over time.)

Unfortunately it is VERY hard to replace the sensor + wires, since the plenum + intake under the plenum have to come off.

If the code 34 is persistent, you could use the (temporarely) fix with the resistor (invented by H. le Hir.)

Look in the FAQ on twinturbo.net on how to do this

what exactly am I listening for with detonation? is it a knocking noise??

Thanks for your help on this, cos I've been shitting it!! I just had my turbo's done a few months back and dont need another f'in bill!!

Vijay

If this makes sense, no it's not a knocking sound, more a tinging sound, under load, ie:when you first pull off, or going up a steep hill with low revs, hope this helps.

Cheers Dave.
