I did not notice it when I bought the car, but part of the rear window glass of my 300zx has small 'bubbles' within the laminated glass, which does affect visibility.

I guess there is not way to get rid of it is there ?

How much is a new rear window for a 300zx import ?

Thanks

John

Is the glass laminated?

I would guess the rear window cost an awful lot.

Now I have taken a closer look at it, it appears that the heater stuff is stuck on the inside ? does that sound right ? And, the small bubbles then must be between the inside surface of the glass and the stick on heater stuff.

Anyone got any ideas ? Do you think one of the auto glass specialist can fit a new heater ?

Cheers

John

What the rear window heater?

Dont think it is on my car.

Otherwise I cant really help you. I know Andy Z is trying to flog a whole tailgate for cheap. If you car is the same colour it will be a lot cheaper than buying a window

if its a jap car, they have a film on the rear window. you can carefully peel it off

  • Author

Thanks Paul,

Yes its a Jap car.

I assume when I peel it off it will be ruined. Do you know who can re-fit one ?

Thanks,

John

the last two i saw was when my tinting guy removed it to tint the windows - i think it is a very light tint IIRC

No film on mine as far as I can tell. Th heater element is just a think foil that is stuck on the inside, mine had a couple of breaks in it which I repaired with that conductive silver paint, didn't have to remove any film to get to it though and I VERY much doubt that the film would be applied before the heater element.

Thanks Andy,

After looking at it closer, the defects are in fact in a tint film that has been applied. How do I get rid of the tint film without damaging the heater circuit ?

Is there any liquids that dissolve the tint film ?

Thanks

John

Hmmm, you might be able to cut the bubbles with a modeling knife and squeeze the air out, but removing the film as a whole is very likely to damage the heater element. If its not too bad then I'd be tempted to say, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' !

Andy,

I guess blisters is the wrong description, its like the entire back window has what I call the 'orange peel' effect, giving extremely poor visibility, so it has to go.

I just looked on the internet, ammonia seems to dissolve it. I must give it a try.

Thanks

John

I know using a hairdryer works to remove alot of stickers and badges, sureley the same applies to tints.

Again I have this film and would like to remove it, looks dirty and shit.

Can you let me know how you get on or has anyone else taken it off successfully?

  • Author

Martinfa,

I found a site on the net that says you can take it off with a mixture of water, amonia and sugar soap. I am trying it right now, solution needs to soak on the window for an hour

Sounds interesting, anyway of getting some pictures for reference?

cheers

Trey - Do you mean before and after pictures ?

I doubt if the camera would pick them up

John

I was thinking a picture of the film itself.

I always thought the glass was coloured, didnt realise there was a tinting film already there. :)

The amonia does soften the film, but it still wont peel very far without breaking. A window tinting firm I spoke to says it must be a real cheap cr*p film. So, its just going to be hours and hours of carefull spraying and scraping I guess.
