piss poor brakes

my brakes have been getting a bit crap lately (as many people complain about on zeds), pads all looked reasonable still so decided to strip & clean.

4 out of the 8 pistons on the front calipers had siezed  . no wonder they were so crap!! pushed them back & pumped them out a few times to free them off.

I now have working brakes again!! :)

next pad change i think i'll get a caliper rebuild kit & do the job properly. bet theres a few out there that need doing!!

Paul,

The calipers are the same ones on the R33 as the BMW 850, the discs are the similiar but need machining!

There must be some big Merc with these on or something similiar:D :D :D

I can also recommend changing over to DOT5. flush out completely and then flush with DOT5, then fill.

Chances are your brake fluid is ancient and full of moisture taking boiling point way down. DOT5 is far far better.

and get some decent pads and disks.

well looked after 300 brakes are pretty good whatever folk say (I've driven 911s, elises, tuscans so I think I know what I'm saying).

hell when it came out in 1990 it was the faster production car to stop from 100 to 0.

they just need TLC.

they will fade after a say 5 or 6 100-0 stops, but most cars will. How many times do you do 100-0 emergency style stops in your Z ?

had a search on net, and someone else has the same ideas:

...do the caliper rebuild kit. It's easy, and then you know everythings working as it should. Then if you want modification improvement at least you're starting from the right point.

I agree stu, when they were working ok i thought they were very good & wondered what all the fuss was about with people saying they were crap.

im sure the big brake conversion is even better, but im gonna stick with the zeds brakes in good working order!! :D

Don't think I've EVER seen a pair of stock calipers in 100% working order tbh. Yes they may all function OK but you get some lazy pistons etc. As it happens over a period of time you don't notice the deterioration. Best thing to do is, when they are seized, bin them like macca says and go for the R33/34 upgrade ;) Only problem is, if you haven't already replaced the tie bar bushes with poly ones, you soon will be :D Mine screwed my stock bushes by the end of the road LMAO :D This is the BEST mod I ever did to my car!!!!
