Need some help.

As most of you know I recently purchased another 300zx.

I picked this car up at a good price, as it had never been registered in this country and the guy just wanted to make his money back. He bought a 2+0 but wanted a 2+2. So he sold the 2+0 to me.

When I bought the car the guy was going away on business that evening. He says he has all the paper work, i.e. de-reg certificate and customs forms etc. But couldn't find them in the short period of time he had to look for them. He said that he would call me when I he got back and then we could trade then. But I decided to give him the money and take the car with a signed agreement between us that he would supply the paper work when he returned.

I'm starting to worry a little that he may not be able to find the paper work for the car.

So if I don't have the paper work.... what do I do ?

1) Should I see if I can get my money back and return the car (spent £500 on it already, restoring it , new bits, MOT etc.).

2) Can I somehow get a copy of the documents, if so who do I speak to and how much doe sit cost ?

3) Or do I just have to pay the Customs and taxes again.

Top be honest I think that due to the condition of the car (i.e. superb) and the way that my missus feels about it, I can't really go with option 1. Cerina loves this car to bit and if I were to give it back now she would probably leave me :D :D.

So if there are no documents... what do I do ?

I guess it's option 4) then.

4) No one on here knows anything about it, which means I'm fooked !!!!

O.K. I've imported a few cars so I've always had the required docs. You definately need the ORIGINAL de-registration document in Japanese and the customs clearance doc. What happens if you don't have these docs I'm not sure but I would guess you will have to get the de-reg document from the 'Japanese DVLA' and a copy of the customs clearance doc from UK customs. Both of these documents should be traceable using the cars chassis no.

peter, ive bought an import from someone and he told me the japanese copy of the de-registration document was kept by the DVLA. does this means that he's tellin porky pies?

its all registered and everything, got number plates and V5 and english copy of de-registration form. is it that once youve got the UK documentation you dont need the jap copy and the DVLA keep it?

No, he's right, the Japanese copy of the de-registration document is kept by the DVLA when you go to register the car, once it's processed you get the new V5 document and thats all you need, nice to have a copy of the de-reg doc in English though.

I have also imported from Japan, it is my clear understanding that the shipping agents are not allowed, by law, to release the car untill the import and VAT duties are paid. So, this should mean that there is no tax to pay..

The De-reg doc is only kept by DVLA AFTER youhave registered it. And without it I feel you can not register it. Having said that if you built it from a big box of bit i am sure something could be done about regisitering it.

If you get stuck I could try a company I use in japan with regard to information on a replacement de-reg cert. I dont know them very well and they might say no, but it might work if you get desperate.

Thanks Guys,

Hopefully it won't come to that but it's not looking too good at the moment. He was supposed to be back on the 12th but not heard from him yet :(

Hi, this is the reply form Japan.....

Dear Mr. Mark Stevens

Thank you for your email.

"De-registration" paper is something that can't be re-issued once it get lost.

I basically think "original de-registration paper" is more important than actual car.

You should ask to get a re-applied registration paper from whoever your friend bought the car from if the original de-registration paper is lost for sure. This looks exactly like the de-registration paper but it just shows that car is registered or de-registered. And then ask them to make English trans for re-applied registration paper.

This should solve the problem.

Tsukasa Matsumoto

Excellent. Thanks for that Mark and everyone else who has helped. The good news is that the guy who we bought the car off of, phoned last night, he will be getting the paper work together over the next few days.

So I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks again, greatly appreciated.
