...or maybe I was just vewy vewy lucky!:)

I've had a problem with the short top hose that goes into the front of the engine for some time (same problem as Beermonster) I've been keeping the old girl topped up with water on a daily basis, but yesterday I went out and got stuck in the most horrendous traffic in London. I encountered 4 major road closures and a HUGE factory fire in Hackney. Spent ages just sitting in the burning sun (t-tops off!:D ) going nowhere fast.

Anyway, after about 5 hours of this I had steam and all sorts of horrible hissing and gurgling noises from the engine bay. I pulled into a garage because I had been driving with the temp needle near maximum for over 1 hour and wanted to see how badly I had b0lloxed my engine.

I let it cool for 1/2 hour, but there was still hissing coming from the rad cap, the dodgy hose and also the expansion tank! I filled the tank, then popped the rad cap. Carefully put water in to be greeted with loud banging noises as if you throw water onto a hot cooker ring! I then had a 6 foot plume of water come bursting from the rad!!

Anyway, after about 20 minutes of filling, spewing out, filling, spewing out, I got all the water to stay in, and the popping/banging noises were gone.

The engine is fine. Sweet. No problems. No oil in the water this morning when I checked, no nasty noises and no loss of power! How lucky is that?

Just goes to show how tough these engines can be.

(gonna get it fixed today though:D )

You were very lucky as pouring cold water into a hot engine is not the best way to save the engine in fact it would cause alot more damage by to rapid cooling.....

If you've got away with that then you are very, very lucky. I wouldn't tread on any cracks in the pavement for a while if I were you !

 Putting cold water into an engine is the best way to get problems!

You were VERY lucky...I suggest the purchase of a lottery ticket forthwith! :)

I was likewise lucky.

Was driving into Malvern with the Missus and a friend of ours from the States.

Fan had been on for a while and I couldn`t work out why, since the temp gauge was pretty happy. Something under the bonnet started to rattle when I hit the gas and I parked up ASAP. Opened her up and there was a load of noises from everywhere, rubber hoses were smoking.....not good.

Left the car for 2 hours or so and filled it up with coolant. Came on the forum, asked a few questions, started to get really worried and asked Nissan about a head gasket change. Was quoted £5k and decided not to bother as the oil and water were obviously not mixing.

All this was over a year ago and I`ve driven about 4K miles in that time. Still no hint of failure in any respect and can count myself luckier than many in this event.

Let it be a lesson to you!!!

Now with the money yove saved on not having a blown engine either get it in a garage and get that hose done, or get tour ass down to nissan buy some hoses and put em on.

If a monkey like me can change em im sure you can!!!
