For anyone who's thinking about replacing their stock head unit (HU), the new HU with the appropriate ISO adaptor and aerial adaptor will most likely not activate the rear amp to power the rear speakers. This is because the connection to activate the rear amp from the new HU will not be in place resulting in the rear speakers not working. Either find out how to activate the amp and have the signal from the new HU amplified, again, by rear amp before it reaches the rear speakers or introduce new wires connecting directly to the rear speakers.

However, I've found another way of bypassing the rear amp without having to route new speaker wires to the rear speakers.

If you want to do this, you need to disconnect the plastic connector to the rear amp and connect the wires as shown in the image below. For these connections I cut up wires from inside a disuse telephone socket as these are rigid but yet maleable enough for the job. These wires have an outer plastic lining required to stop likely short circuits in this application. You need to strip back approx. 5mm of the cover from both ends of the wire of appropriate length, bend half the bare part back forming a V on both ends and insert into the correct connector sockets.

After inserting all four wires, use duct tape to keep these links in place-just in case it should come loose. There may be thicker wires which are more appropriate for the job if you have time to source them out.

I hope this will be of use for people who do not want to mess around looking for possible wire routes and do not want to use the existing rear amp.

Hello mate, got my Zed yesterday and it had a standard fit 'National' cassette player. Where exactly is this rear speaker amp placed?

Hi

well done on your new purchase and may it bring you years of joy.

The rear amp is located in the boot above the RH wheel arch. Zeds being zeds, to get to it you need to remove the following

1. Centre panel behind boot latch & foam tools container

2. Right corner panel and boot light

3. Boot roller canvas

4. Plastic cover of something to left of right wheel arch cover (close to rear right speaker lump thing)

5. Right rear speaker plastic housing

To unplug the amp connector/harness, I suggest you remove the amp first as mine was impossible to disconnect without its removal.

All the best

Van

Instructions above corrected:

1. Plastic cover of something to left of right wheel arch cover (close to rear right speaker lump thing)

2. Centre panel behind boot latch & foam tools container

3. Right corner panel and boot light

4. Boot roller canvas

5. Right rear speaker plastic housing

Thanks Van :)

Much appreciated :)

I've just been informed that the import zeds may not have the amps but all uk zeds do.

Ah, that'll be why I couldn't find it then................duh!!

Doesn't explain why my rear speakers don't work though.

They never have, so assumed I didn't have any until I looked the other day, and found two Kenwoods!!

Assumed I had a rear-amp problem, but now need to rethink.......hmmm.............nuts!!

Probably a stupid suggestion but..... have you checked the fader is correctly set up????

Yep, fader's ok.

The original [Clarion] radio/cassette didn't give me anything from the rear speakers, and the new Sony CD I fitted last week doesn't either..........very odd.

The previous owner has fitted Sony speakers in the front doors so I assume he fitted the rear Kenwoods too. (Unless they were standard on late j-specs, who knows).

Both ends seem connected ok, so must be the bit in the middle. :)

Graham

Try connecting the new HU directly to the rear speakers with a separate wire to test them. If they work then you know for defo that you've go a break in the middle of the existing rear wires.

Andrew, where is it and what does it look like?

Maybe it's TT's that have them and NA's that don't.

Van, you are a star.

Just used your little wiring diagram and it works a treat.

Cheers mate, I really didn't fancy routing new cables! :D :D :D

my jap import has a seprate amp on each speaker, with a ported box, front and rear, do i win a prize???

I had this problem when I replaced the stock HU on my UK car.

I used the Autoleads ISO to Nissan OEM adaptors. However when you look at the OEM plug there is one wire extra which doesn't correpsond to a wire in the Autoleads kit. This is the live feed to the rear amp. All you need to do is join this to the accessory live (ie electric arial wire) using a scotchlok connector.

Then the rear speakers AND amp can be used.

By the way, does anyone know anything about the arial relay? (eg where is it and where can I get one???)

My arial has never worked properly, even with the stock HU. My mechanic reckons it's the relay as it receives power ok, it doesn't fully extend or retract.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Sorry to bu,p this thread but does anyone still have a copy of the rear amp diagram?
