Going down the East Lancs (National Speedlimit dual carrage way for the people who doing know. ;))

I see this red Z with a West Wing kit on and round rear light conversion.

I pull up behind him and he boots it and so did I. Revs climbing to 7000rpm and I slam it into 3rd with a little screetch of my tyres which where only 20 miles old and needed scrubbing in. Speed climbing to, errrrrrrr I wont tell you that ;)

No matter what he tried the Red Z was not getting away from me.

We tried it the other way round, I booted and he followed and again, no-one pulled away.

Not much of a kill more of an achivement. He had lightened pullies, Mongoose Exhaust, BlitZ induction, JWT ECU and A'pexi boost controller set at 1.2 bar.

I just have my exhaust and Apexi induction. No chipped ECU, no higher boost, no lightened pullie and my engine has done 162,000 miles ;)

I would have beat him if we where on a twisty part of the road. As soon as we came to a sign that said roundabout 1 mile he started braking. Guttless he was. ;) No confidence in his Z's brakes. :D

He says he has a boost leak. I told him that the very loud hiss from all around the engine bay is normal, ;) and it was his Apexi boost controller causing the boost leak and I offered to take it off his hand for a resonable fee. :D

Hehehehe. Only joking ;)

But I was happy with the result though. ;)

Shows the old girl still has some life left in her.

Safety boost?

Saftey boost doesnt work with a boost controller. It tries to activate but the boost controler over rules it. This is why sometimes boost jets are better, as saftyboost still works and will lower the boost.

MAC just admit it. For a car that has driven the quivelant of 2/3 distance to the moon, its still a damn fine motor, dispite all the rust ;) But I say its a weight saving technique

The only NA car that was stupid enough to try it on that day was a silver pug with the whole family in it. I mean some people just dont have any brians ;)

The timing would still be retarded though.

I think its mostly he has a boost leak along with the fact he has a 94 300ZX which wasnt the fastest one.

We are making excuses but we are failing to point out the real reason.

IM JUST A DAMN GOOD DRIVER ;)

Can I quote off Top Gear

"I AM A DRIVING GOD!"

Stu been honest here and not funny!

There has got to be a problem with Daves car, could be anything from a boost leak to faulty boost controler. If Daves car was running how it should be it would not even be a race!

I know there is something wrong with his car.

He says there a boost leak and we are putting the bean can on it next week. The bean can method has progressed to a bean can and a Felix cat food can. ;) Found oon of my boost leaks, as at idle my boost gauge used to read about -19. Now its -21ish. Its come down. Is that because I have fixed a leak?

We are also hooking up my spare boost gauge to his car so we can really see what boost he is running at. His Apexi actually says he is running 1.2 bar but I think it gets the pressure from a different place than the gauge does. So if ther is a leak after the APEXi sensor it wont show on the APEX'i controller.

We are also doing his brakes. He cant brake for more than a few seconds at a time as they start to fade. Hence braking 1 mile before a roundabout or lights.

No hes got that APEXI AVC-R or what ever its called

Stu If you think your stock Z is fast, then nip around the corner and see how it fairs against Ginger bollocks AMG;):p

Very scarey on the brakes at the moment Stu- those discs/pads/lines can't go on soon enough

As for the leak, the boost controller sometimes goes as high as 1.25 but I'm not sure thats a true reading. I'm going to try switching the controller off (giving me stock boost) and seeing how much it reads. Hopefully the beans and cat food will find the problem ;)

Also, I wouldn't consider apexi intake, mongoose exhaust, decat, traction control to be vitually stock :p

Dave

It is virtually stock.

Induction only give you 4-6% more.

Exhaust again 4-6% more

Decat has been discussed and doesnt make the car any more powerful just spools the turbos quicker.

Traction control is only needed when you wheel spin. :P

Hehehehehehe.

No it aint stock really but its not far. ;)

If you were running 1.25 you should leave a stock Z standing and get a lot of detonation!

Don't know how it could be reading wrong though?

Any new results on this, since Dave's boost leak has been found.

  • Author

Its 1-1 now. :D

He still has a boost leak some where but we have no idea where it is. It is near the turbo :(

When we got to about 4000rpm his higher boost caused him to pull away, but after every gear change I actually managed to get some back but not much before his turbos spooled up.

I have decatted pipes which as discussed makes you turbos spool significantly quicker.

I wonder what it will be like though when the other boost leak is sorted. It is quite bad but no where as near as bad as the main one we found. After pressurising the engine Dave said he could actually feel the air coming out. That is how bad it was.

Stuart

Dont understand this - how can you ever reach 1.25bar with a boost leak. Either it leaks or it doesnt and 1.25bar tells me it holds pressure pretty well.

Hope it aint detting!

  • Author

No the Boost Controller was reckoning it was running at 1.2bar. It was set at 1.2 bar but the hole was so big most of it was coming out. I reckon only 0.7bar or less was actually reaching the engine.

Stuart

Errr that can't happen. Either the pressure is all the way down the pipe or not at all.

  • Author

Not really, that is for a system where the air is stagnent, in a sealed unit.

For air that is flowing if there is a leak the pressure will show higher before the leak than after it.

Since we replced the pipe with the huge split, the boost readings on the avcr have come down to around 1.1 to 1.15. This leads me to believe that the pipe we repaired may have been involved in the actual boost sensing mechanism.

I will take the hardpipes off and have a check to see if anything is visible for the remaining boost leak.

Dave

I'm with Chris on this.

If you ve got big splits on boost pipework you cant make any real boost. If you have something indicating 1.25bar with seriously leaking boost pipes I'd be sceptical what its reading.

be interested in the explanation once you find it
