Inlet cam variation

Take a look at the attached picture of two engines when stripped at the front, the top one has different inlet cam shaft pulley inserts, never seen them before today, always been the type like in the lower picture...any one recognise them for anything special or is it because it is a series two

    could it be adjustable camshaft pulleys (for tuning purposes) ?

    ..like the ones from from eg. Tomei.
