Was hassled today by a guy wanting to buy either a Zed or a Supra.

Wife was in the car (patient thank God) as the guy took a look over the Zed and said that it has converted him! Hurrah! Looks like we`ll be getting another Zed owner in Shropshire!

He wants to spend about 9K. Is older but modded or earlier and unmodded the way to go?

If you had the cash, what would be your path?

Buy an older UK manual car, and modify the bollox out of it!!!

Then you get classic car insurance on, and just pay another £100 quid a year for all the mods!

I'd personally go for a newer unmodded car. That way at least you know the history and (hopefully) that it hasn't been too badly thrashed...

IMHO...

i went for the newest uk car that i could find - unmodded.

then done what i wanted myself. far more fun :D

Although there are many modified 300zx's out there, there is nothing more satisfying than modifing the car yourself.

Having a picture diary over the years or in my case months of what it use to look like and was capable of to what it looks like now and what it can do.

I would suggest he buys a good fairly stock 300zx for around the £7k mark and uses the next £2k getting it up to scratch mechanically. Then gradually start on the modifications once the car is sound.

£7k today should buy you a fairly stock '95 /'96 model.

I would agree 100% with smw1.

If you have £9k overall to spend, but one for £7k and keep the rest back for a good service, and getting it running sweet, with maybe a bit of room there for a couple of your own choice mods. Its bound to have a few niggles that the last owner didn't sort out!

Oh.......and well converted! :D

Thanks all for advice.

I must agree with you. Modding the car to the spec you want is totally satisfying.

The guy is ringing me over the weekend and I`ll pass on your advice to him. Will be good to have another Zedder so close. Thanks again

The only comment I would make is that it is mileage that kills cars, particularly these cars, not age!

I wouldn't start throwing loads of cash modifying a car with 70k+ on the clock - and that is going to rule out a lot of uk spec cars.

I started to check out a few imports in order to see if a low mileage car was a better deal - and ended up buying one. In general, the japs take much better care of their 300s than most uk owners. The mileage is low and there are some top examples about for that kind of money. You'll also find that most imports have some of the basics, like zorsts, wheels and induction already done, so you can get down the the serious stuff straight away.

But, please, do your own research. Drive as many as you can before you buy one.

(and don't forget those cute folding mirrors, but beware the 2 point rear seatbelts and japanese labels on all the kit!)

milage ... uk cars generally have higher milages .. jap cars do not. they spend most of their time in trafic, they end up with the same wear and tear but show less miles .... what is the easiest way toi put miles on a car .. motorways. mates 214 had 140000 miles never looked after but went better than cars i seen with 50 or 60 thous cos al motorways ... a well maintained Z regarless or origin has a bullet proof engine ... all it takes is 1 hamfisted owner to screw it all up

Chap got in touch with me again...went to look at a Zed in London. Had smokey exhausts and the guy told him it was normal for these cars. Well, guess mine can`t be normal then huh cos I got no damn smoke!

Anyways, the point is that one way or another we`ll get him in the direction of a good Zed...mostly thanks to the sterling advice I have received many times on this very forum!

So, thanks folks!!!
