Are you for joining the Euro?

Yes or No?

No name calling or anything else, just either Vote on the poll, or you can post your reasons as well as voting.

I vote NO!

Reasons.

I dont like the idea of our countries money being ruled by people who have nothing to do with it. Interest rates have stayed level for a while to try get people spending more and to help on the rising house prices. If they where high this country would be in financial chaos.

Also prices WILL go up if the UK joins. Every country who joined the Euro had price rises. Reason being if something costs £29.99 or €41.77 they will rise the price to €41.99 to make it look better. They will not lower it to €40.99 because they will lose more money. May not sound much but when buying your weekly shopping a little here, a little there will add up to maybe you shopping costs £2 or £3 more than before. That adds up to £100 £150 more on your shopping. It doesnt stop there it will effect everything. Petrol currently 72.9p here, which is €1.0152 a litre, will rise to €1.02 or something. Small amount but still an increase.

Cloths will be effected, holidays, travel fares will all rise to round up to a nice number. A £139,000 house will cost €193,579 but they dont advertise prices like that they will make it 193,999 because they dont want to lower it to make less money.

People say that we cant survive with being out of the Euro, however the countries are not in the Euro currently are doing very well.

What are your thoughts?

Stuart

Id sooner spend dollars than euros, but eitheir way we'd still be spending more of them and getting less. At least keeping the pound we have an exchange rate thus, making us one calculation away from knowing how much the british government likes to shaft us.

Maybe they should ask that ****** terrorist with the hook for a hand what he thinks, considering the government are paying him £20k a year in benefits (some of which is disability benefit for blowing his hand off while making bombs to blow british people and buildings up!!).

RANT OVER.

Oh yeah the euro, no thanks!!

Stuart (SRRAE), I don't class myself as European either, but some of the forms that you fill in these days don't have English or British - just European.

Personally if I could build a big watertight wall around Europe, excluding the UK, then fill it with water, I would. :D

Or actually, maybe a ma-hoosive flood is called for - wipe the slate clean and start again.....

Joining is just going to be an excuse to hike up the prices on EVERYTHING........we get ripped off enough already.

Blair is saying it will be a disaster if we don't join but if you look at Germany, they're not looking too clever at the moment. All the time Blair is looking to become some super European Leader, I can't believe anything he says about it.

So thats a big f a t NO

nope! cant think of anything funny to say there!! :D ;)

I don't really know whether I want to join or not, though I think nationalistic pride is a bit of a stoopid reason for not joining.

I'd certainly prefer to join hands with my European chums than sail our fair isle(s) towards Washington.

One of my concerns is where the financial powerhouse of Europe will be: the City of London (the financial bit) contributes staggering amounts to our economy, and I'm nervous about the implications of either staying out or joining the EMU. It would be bad for, say, Frankfurt to take over these financial dealings. Sadly I don't know enough about it to make an informed decision (there's a task for me!) so at the moment I'm still stroking my chin.

AndyP certainly has a point about lower interest rates, though that's only really useful if you're in debt (e.g. a mortgage-holder). Not so great if you're trying to save - but there are other ways around that.

Price transparency is good - my barber was telling me about the great deal he got by getting some Pirelli tyres in Calais rather than Dover. 50% discount according to him. Fuel would probably need to get much cheaper in the UK too.

I appreciate the Clarksonesque sentiment about Spain nicking our taxpayer's money, and dunno what I think about it, but I'm disinclined to believe anything that comes out of Clarkson's gob since his description of the 300ZX...

Gonna find out about City of London and will post back probably ages after we've forgotten about this!

Russ.

The last time I checked the world was round boys and girls.

Quit the flag waving, its bullsh|t unless it is in relation to football.

They made some real nice long straight roads over this way Mike;)

Nationalistic pride is not a daft reason for not wanting to join up. UK and England are getting swamped under a move to allow all sorts of religions and festivals, celebrations, laws, rituals whatever at the expense of the British ones.

Now, I'm all for diversity and culture and expanding ones horizons, but NOT at the expense of long held British traditions.

The British Flag is one such example - not being allowed to fly OUR flag because it may offend other cultures living in THIS country? I think not! If I want to fly the English or British flag then it shouldn't even be a QUESTION of being allowed to.

IN terms of Finance, I believe Frankfurt is one of the biggest financial capitals in Europe, so it's really not going to take much to make that THE financial capital...

Fair enough - different strokes for different folks and all that. For me, personally, I don't feel sufficiently patriotic for that to affect my decision. It's clear that plenty of people do, which is cool. I'd prefer to see if it was in both mine and the UK's long term interest to join, and I honestly don't yet know. Most of the arguments against joining can be pretty pursuasive, and I reckon it's quite difficult actually finding any good arguments for it.

Tell you what though, this fence is starting to get a bit uncomfortable on my #rse! ;)

Russ.

Why did the French go protesting and shut down France this week?

Why because they demand their early pensions at 58 or sooner and absolutely no change. But they also need to balance their books.

What will their government do? As usual give in.

Who will pay? Everybody in the Euro.

Why? because printing more Euros is easier. How do think it got to thousands of Francs or Lire for a cup of coffee.

The southern and eastern europeans are even more into printing money. They need UK in so we can share in being inflated?

Harold Wilson did it years ago and robbed everybody who saved their money. The winners were all those in debt who didnt deserve it.

If we do join it take as much Euro long term debt as you can get!

  • 2 years later...

If they join europe I am leaving this country. Fook it I hate the idea. I will move to another country and resettle there. I was thinking .............Germany or France.

Seriously NO! its bad enough us becoming fookin Asian let alone European Asian. If you havent yet heard the latest Jim Davidson stand up do so.

I actually like €, it has been much easier travelling in Europe after the euro was invented.. The only bad thing is that all prices has been rised with up to 1/3 :(

Definately, positively, absolutely NO NO NO :nono: :nono: :nono: .... unless we can have Stella at french/etc prices :D :D :duffer:

I vote YES!!!!!!!!!!!! no doubt!!

NO NO NO

The French won't buy our Lamb
