Under very hard acceleration...there is detonation (pinking noise????)

I have ugraded turbos/Blitz Realize TT zorst/HKS induction/Iridium Plugs running 1.0-1.1 Bar (read from Blitz Boost Gauge). How can I cure this...the car is running fine (at moment). I also had a full engine rebuild about 12 months ago!!!!!!

Thanking You

what kind of injectors do you have ?

and what kind of chip ?

-Eric

I'm told that the JWT chip that I just bought SHOULD solve my det problem

Sadly all the rest of the work I have planned is creating a different kind of DEBT problem!

LOL:D

Try NGK Plugs PFR6B-11B gapped to.92mm

Use Shell Optimax

Get upgraded intercoolers

Get new chip!

Get an AFC

check timing, and turn boost down.

Jezz well done, the most important thing to do;)

and free. :)

Have you thought of Water or Water/Methanol injection. Water is very cheap (even on Southern water meter) and is great at reducing cylinder temps. I have seen it used on a few mental HP cars without troubles. Intercooler spray is another way of cooling intake down and lessening the chances of detonation.

The cost is lower than most other mods that allow more boost to be used.

Anyone got any thoughts??? MAC???

Probelme is it is a way around detonation, it supresses it but does not solve it. You would ideally want to solve the actual det problem first rather than it still be there in the background

I bought an extra washer bottle and pump to make up an intercooler spray system but can't get any decent jets for it.

Standard washer jets don't spray a fine enough mist to cover the whole cooler.

Haven't decided how I'm going to get it to activate yet.

I could get a temperature activated switch and have it come on as the charge temp rises but don't know how to make one/where to get it.

The kits I've seen for Scoobies etc seem ridiculously expensive for what they are - £150 to £200. So far this has cost me about £15 so worth a go for not much cash.

Not even sure if it will make a noticeable difference?

Has anyone read any info on them?

Check fuel pressure and delivery, check timing and put fresh optimax (or LRP if de-cat done) first! Detonation is way way bad.

It was my understanding that by cooling the intake charge and thus cylinder temperature below the point at which pre-ignition of the fuel will take place IS solving detonation. I appreciate that there is a limit to how much you can cool the cylinders down for a given amount of water and therefore a limit as to how much power you can extract from the fuel safely. The turbo F1 cars of the early 80's and Group B rally cars ran water injectiction very succesfully, allowing them to run more boost and extract more power without detonation taking place.

You can never solve detonation all together because you will always have a physical limit after which detonation will happen. All that you can do is have the correct quantity of fuel and air at the right temperatures ie if you have pre-ignition under high load at 20 degrees C ambient then you may not have it at 10 degrees C. Water / Methanol injection is in effect intercooling on demand.

Please do not misunderstand me, I just think that it is a cheap way of allowing more boost to be run without detonation taking place. I agree that this is just one option of many to cure pre-ignition.

Ideally we will all have 1000cc injectors, run on neat methanol as fuel and not need to run turbos at all. Sounds like top fuel drag racing :D :D :D

Please don't let this turn into another battle of "The right Fix is..."

Chris spraying cool water on them will lower the charge temp, however a washer bottle will run out of water after only a few miles:D

You may aswell piss in a cup and throw that on LOL,had a mate with a Cossie that had a huge tank in the boot full of water just to feed the intercooler:rolleyes:

Yeah I know it won't last long but if it worked I would mount a bigger one somewhere.

I've seen some of the Scooby kits recommending a 15L tank in the boot! :O

I found a controller here for about £85 that seems to be very clever.

It's from Australia too so looks like they are into it a lot over there.

Lymon.

Standard Injectors and Chip at moment.........

Regardz

Where do you get the water injection kits from??

Right so standard injectors standard chip, what boost are you running at the mo?

Water injection kits by Aquamist are available from Demon Tweeks.

Paul.

Get a chip first..

That'll most likely solve your detonation problems.

-Eric

You do need to sort out the fueling if that has not been done already. Alternatively see http://ashleypowers.com/Zemulator/Index.htm

I am going to shut up now!!!

Paul

Boost 1.0-1.1 Bar (read from Blitz Boost gauge)

Regardz

my money's deffo on the chip, but until you sort it turn the boost down, you run a high risk of killing the engine other wise.

I'd imagine that your injectors are close to the limit too.

what fuel are you running it on?? try optimax - higher octane rating to prevent detonation you see :)

I come from Aus, we have temps where i live being on average on 30°c - 40°c, water injection is a way around detonation and the aussies are full on into it another thing is check the timing bro

if it starts to det retard it a little bit when raising boost retard the timing so you wont detonate,

i have a VL commodore which runs a RB30ET engine and when i wind up boost to 18 psi it will start to detonate but if i retarded the timing by 20 degrees it will solve that problem,

with the zed i run it on 14 psi (approx 1 bar) but with timing wound back, and a rising rate fuel pressure regulator by Vortex (runs 6:1)

have fun with the zeds

slippery when wet this ZED IS CONSTANTLY SIDEWAYS

another thing

could be intake temp, shit fuel, running stock intercoolers?

could be carbon build up on piston crowns

could bo too much boost

could also be oil blow by (fit a catch can) as oil vapour significantly drops fuel octane

could also be shit fuel use 98 ron unleaded.. synergy 8000/optimax

Do you have a catch can fitted? as I am fitting one next week, don't think anyone here has done it yet.
