Anyone know what the reason might be for this:

Basically in any gear, when my revs pass through the 4-5K band, I get a weird groaning sound from the front - I'm assuming it's the engine, as it's rev-related, but who knows?! In fact - it doesn't groan on the way back down (with no load), which may or may not be

Sounds like Chewbacca is stuck under the car. Goes away after a while and there're no other ill effects.

Any ideas?

Russ.

Russ , you got a TT?

Could be the dreaded ' goosehonk'!!!

whats a goose honk?

Do you know BOV's make a shhhh sound when the accelerator is lifted off or when the gear is changed. The goose honk is the sound the stock recirculating valves sometimes makes. Recircs blow the air which usually blown out by BOVs, back onto the turbos to make the spin up quicker. However, when they get old or when the air flow is increased you get a goose honk sound when you change gear from higher revs. Its the air flowing round the valve doing the same thing what happens when you blow over the top of an empty bottle and get that hoot noise. Thats happening in the recirc, but because of the force of the air, its sounds like a goose honk.

Hmmm, not unless it's a sort of spectral goose apparition. The sound actually happens when accelerating hard, not when changing gear, and is more of a groan than a honk!

I'm beginning to think my engine doesn't like me!

Russ.

Where are you based mate ?

I wouldn't mind having a listen to that.

That sounds like Gooshonk, from the Intake, it should do it when your partly on off throttle ect.

Stu - I'm in north london (wood green/muswell hill). Would be happy to demonstrate (if I can find a stretch of road without too many speed-humps!)

I'll investigate the goosehonk theory some more. I'm just fairly sure that I'm not doing anything but accelerating when the noise occurs.

Off to search the forum about 'honk now...

Russ.

I have a few friends up in muswell hill. it's just round the A406 from me (I'm near Ilford).

If you wanna test for goose honk drive the car at slow - normal speeds and watch the needle on the boost gauge. When this passes the 0 from - to + or + to -, you should get a goose honk, you can actually hold it at 0psi and honk for a while. The longest goose honk I managed to sustain was about 0.5 mile. You'll find that if you fit an induction, zorst or decat the goose honk area will increase i .e. rather than just passing 0 it will spread to -1 to +1psi.

OOh your going to have fun searching on the word "goosehonk"!!! youll get nearly as many matches as you would with the dreaded "M" word!!!
