I'm planning to buy an old (possibly knackered) classic car for

Question is - what do we buy? I've had suggestions of a Mini, Triumph Spitfire, Ford Cortina and a few others... Obviously parts have to be obtainable, but I want a car with some rarity. Contradiction in terms I know :D .

Any suggestions? Like I said, we only wanna spend up to £200ish on the vehicle itself, obviously it'll cost more as we fix it up, respray etc but thats our budgeted outlay for the car itself.

Thanks for any replies :)

Get a Nissan/Datsun. 10 years ahead of their time. Won't get a 240Zor a 260Z for

get a 3litre capri, fix it up, then learn about rear wheel steering.

I only say that as it was my first car and always wanted to turn it into the Tickford Capri.

I'll get my coat

Old triumph I say.

Classic Brittish car lots of chrome which looks lovely when polished. Plus its one of those things that you can do yourself but takes time. But once you have done it, it looks beautiful.

Yeah I like the looks of most of the Triumphs - and they can be had for little money which is good, just registered on ebay - damn there are some good bargains!! :D

Those Capris are tempting too, anyone ever driven/owned one?

My dad has Carpis'. I think he had 3 in his time ranging from dirty brown, gold and then a turquoise 2.8 Injection Ghia. I think they where very tail happy.

But I remember something strange about the engine of the 2.8. Cant remember what though. :S

I would go Triumph. There will be plenty of scrap yards round the country with parts for a car like that.

a triumph will put a dent in your pocket if you want to do it right,

my damn MG has cost me near on 5 grand and i probably have another 3 grand to spend on her to get her mint :(

had a 3ltr Capri, almost as much fun as a Z,especially in the wet :D they are real tail happy,i put a sandbag either side in the boot and that helped a lot.Still a nice looking car, cheep to maintain and goes like stink. ;)

I would say a Triumph. we'll I would wouldn't I, I'm a director of the TSSC :D

But on the same tack you will get nothing even close to suitable for a first restoration for £200 in terms of a Spitfire. Having said that a Spitfire or Herald makes a very easy first restoration as its a chassis based car, i.e. you can seperate the tub from the chassis, it really depends on how brave you are, a total rust bucket will cost you a fortune to restore.

There was an excellent MkIII Spitfire for sale at the weekend for £650, it was complete, with MOT but in need of a full restoration, go for something like that if I were you.

All parts for the small Triumphs are easily available and relatively cheap. Just look at http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/ for an indication of costs etc.

If you want any more info on Triumphs please feel free to email me.

It wasn't you at Leatherhead in the Silver Zed was it?
