To recap, I've had the auto-manual conversion and the gearbox neutral switch has never been connected.

 

Looked into how it actually works today and established from the Techtom that switch reports OFF when not in neutral, the same as if the switch is physically disconnected. Therefore, my theories about variable valve timing actuation and cruise control are shot to sh1te. As I'd got that far I did connect the switch up (just pulls the line pin 13 on the autobox controller-pin 44 on the ECU down to ground) and now I can happily watch the Techtom report ON when it's neutral and OFF when in gear. Will make no difference though, so now I still have to establish why my cruise control doesn't work ....

Mine was due to the clutch pedal slightly touching the pressure switch even when fully released but changing my clutch sorted it before i did!
