Ordered $500 kit from courtesy and was eagerly awaiting its arrival, as time wore on I was getting concerned by its non-arrival.

 

I needn't have worried, it was safe in the hands of H.M. Customs and excise, and for the the paltry sum of £114.57p, they will let me have it. Robbing basta*ds.

 

I take it this is standard robbery? or have I just been unlucky?

Sounds like a lot. I would have thought that the duty and VAT payable would be nearer £60-70 on a $500 order.

You see, I have a mate in Aus who decided to send me and the Mrs a mega gas barbeque for a weeding present. It's the real deal and the envy of all my mates, but when I went to collect it at the airport, I had to pay nearly £300 import duty and excise and VAT (and to add insult to injury, they added vat to the shipping cost too!)

 

At least it cooks nice sausages!

If you're paying £89.31 VAT, and my maths is correct, that makes the order value + duty = £510.34

 

That makes the £17.26 duty 3.5% of the total. So the total value before duty and VAT is around £493.08

 

That's something like $789, so unless you've paid around $289 shipping, that seems very high to me still.
