I will shortly have the following spec Z

1991 Jap Auto TT

Mongoose SS Exhaust

K&N Filters (Standard Airbox)

Stiffer springs (Lord knows what they are)

ECU rechip

What would be the next mods to do?

Dump valves? Cold Air Induction kit?

Any suggestions?

There are so many performance upgrades. Do a search or look under the Links and you will find loads of ideas!

It depends how deep your pockets are at the end of the day!!

;) Cheers,

F.T.

Well, pockets arent that deep. Plus I dont want to put too much stress on the engine. So no taking the boost up to 21PSI :)

In fact, what would you say would be a sensible BHP figure for the Z engine, that doesnt comprimise reliability too much?

  • Author

Just read what I typed.

Of course, you cant be skint to run a z either!! ;)

Im now able to pamper my Z and only drive it in leisure time! :)

Rather than the 80 mile round trip I was doing every day for 2 months.

Induction kit's gotta be the next step....

Probably the best bhp for not much cash upgrade. HKS, Apexi or Blitz seem popular choices. Apparently the Apexi one works best for 300's.

As for dump valves they have minimal effect on performance, especially if your not running vast boost, but they do sound the business;)

Dont you mean dump valves sound the bus(hhhhhhhhh)iness. ;)

How about mods to brakes? Its easy to get caught up in spending money on making the Z go faster........but how about makng it stop better? (but defo after induction kit!)

  • Author

Hmm brakes. Yes, usefull. :) Which discs would you all recommend? Any particular manufacturer?

As for suspension, the springs have been replaced with much harder items, and the dampers are being replaced at the same time as the engine chip when the car goes to Jeff (Next week).

Have a word with Jeff about discs and pads, or take a look at 3g brakes. If you want bigger discs or 6 pot calipers.......make sure you're sitting down when you get the price! Those buggers aint cheap!

Assuming the brakes you have work (!) ,,,, then I would say a boost upgrade via either boost jets (dead cheap) or a boost controller (dead trendy). Run now more than 14psi and all should be fine. Should provide around 350-375 at the crank, so up to around 300-ish at the wheels, assuming all else is in order.

No-one's asked you which chip you're running, cos if like me you bought one with a superchip, then that's your first priority!

I would say Racelogic Traction Control is definately the way to go-make it your top priority mate if you wanna enjoy the Power (in any weather) and at the same time be Safe and then upgrade the brakes

So how's that workingout for you then Ammar ?.

Any problems since you got it back ?

Also got your cheque mate, will be cashing it in the next few days, thanks.

NigelBoyd:

The chip is being supplied by Jeff, so I dont imagine it will be a superchip.

Hmm.. Think an Apex induction kit is called for as well. :)

No I shouldn't think so!

:D

Bigbscan-It will be a JWT chip or similar i suppose, which is very good. Apex'i power intake is what i have and I'm very pleased with it m8 :)

Stuart-regarding the TC , my Z's been in the respray shop for past month or so....I have been driving my NA all this while which has been a bit of pain in the wet but thank God the summer has finally arrived (I think, looking through the window:p

yeah on my TT, da TC had made a hell of a difference (and a million thanks once again for fitting and refitting :D it for me). I think I might just have to tighten the slip percentages a bit when i get it back through a lappy and that's about it. Good news that you received the cheque too

Is it worth putting a chip on a NA (sorry if off topic)

  • Author

The chip allows higher fueling/boost levels, so you get a big improvement on a turbo'd car.

A reprogrammable chip in an NA engine should allow to take full advantage of having a less restrictive exhaust and a cold air intake. However, gains are going to be on the conservative side. What it should give, however, is a smoother torque curve and a boost to the midrange. Just dont expect anything above, say a 5-10% improvement for the three mods.

Oh, and some dyno work to make sure the chip is setup correctly for the car.

Hi Burf2000,

I also have an NA and there was a time when i wanted to have my NA chipped and when i done a lot of research......I ended up buying a TT !!!

ITS NOT WORTH MODDING AN NA MATE!

You can send your ECU to JWT in US and get it remapped for around $795+shipping to gain around 30BHP (their claim) or locally by UNICHIP for £600+VAT for 25-35BHP

http://www.unichip.co.uk.

I think their site is under-construction at present.

I would personally get an after-market Induction, de-cat and an Exhaust and that's about it. It costs more than twice to mod an NA (compared to a TT) and the gain is less than half.

Hope this helps.

LOL, it makes it sound like I charged you to fit it :D :D.

yes it does Stu :D

my mistake I should've written " a million thanks once again for fitting/refifitting it for me FREE of charge";)

Have you bought any Bovs yet???

I haven't been checking the forum as my Lappy's f**ked at home (only got access at work).

Check out my site for installation instructions.

Also have a word with Jaylox for a pirce.
