Remote control ICE

Any one got any ideas?

I just got a new Alpine head unit fitted and it came with a remote. A bit daft, but then it is quite a reach to the centre console, si I am currently experimenting with the idea of mounting the remote somewhere handy, ie near the gear lever or steering wheel.

What I'd really like to do, though, is have a few basic controls mounted on the steering wheel, which is non-standard, see pic...

If you have an Alpine headunit with the remote control input at the back (Hard wired remote) then alpine do a universal interface which you could use. You can pick the commands you want to make remote control and install switches on your wheel to use them. Only problem you may have is the wiring, I would recomend using coily microphone cable which should allow enough movement to turn the wheel lock to lock.

Good luck.

Paul,

thanks for the help, this sounds promising, Any idea where I can find out more about the switches I can use?

Any SPST momentary switch, one smart suggestion would be to obtain the switches used on Clifford alarms for entering pin numbers etc. These are available from any clifford dealer and are self adhesive, all that is required is an 8mm mounting hole drilled into your steering wheel. They have two switches in one unit ie 2 units gives 4 switched outputs, 3 gives 6 etc. I would imagine that 4 units would be enough for your purpose giving you 8 total outputs. Vol +, Vol -, Track +, Track-, Scan +, Scan-, Sorce, Mute etc.

Good Luck,

Paul
