I was talking to a boffin at kenlowe fans and was asking him a few questions!

I asked him about replacements for the Z fan!!

He said the problem with mechanical fans is that they do not move enough air at tickover, a big consideration for me living in London!

Also above a certain speed the flow of air through the rad is impeded by the mechanical fan!

So basically we have a small range of speeds where the mechanical fan is of some use!

Has anyone fitted Electric fans to their TT Z and have an aftermarket temp gauge, have you noticed any increase in temperature?

Mark every single guy on TTNET that has used modded fans have basically gone back to the old sytem, worth a search i think.

Think you might be misinformed.

TT zeds already have a two speed electric fan in front of the rad and aircon condenser as well as an engine driven fan viscous coupled do da with a bi metallic spiral spring clutch to lock it up (when really hot) behind the rad. The airflow will rise substantially when it locks up and it will only lock up if its hot enough. The additional 2 speed electric one will only come on under certain water temperature and aircon demand conditions and speeds - Check the manual for full data. Zeds got belt n braces and then some!

Euro spec zeds also have a 30% bigger rad cooler surface - to aid with autobahn driving! With all this the "if it aint broke dont fix it"

moto applies.

Kenlowe is out of luck here

Tell you something though. Hot days make the Z water really hot. On a cool evening my temperature hardly reaches 60ºC when driving on the motorway.

I went on the motorway last Thursday when it was really hot doing 70 for about 15 miles and my after market temp went to just under 95ºC and the stock gauge was normal.

What temp should I start to panic at?

Stuart

Anything over 100 degrees and i think you need to look at switching off car lol, 115 degrees and heads are history.

I just did a search on TT.net, Mark, and one person so far said that they keep the engine cooler when the engine wasn't working as hard. But once the temp reaches 80ºC the Electric fans where not good enough and the temp kept getting higher and higher. He had to put the stock back on.

Hmmmm. I was getting close to that. Just read on TT.net actually, that flushing the water out properly and use special cleaners which will clean out any old conjield anti freeze an help a lot. I think I will do that tomorrow.

Stillen in the US markets the euro spec radiator as a 30% more cooling job.

If a tuned engine has problems with cooling then thats the first step before using bigger fans.

Stuart - the guy with the 240Z had a locked up viscous fan that would consume a lot of hp as it would be driving air all the time. I bet he had no over heating problems though. So no great surprise he gets a big improvment taking it off. I used to do the same in winter with my old 240Z. Could prolly get away with it on the 300 in winter too.

I think you can check your leccy fan is operating by pulling out the fan relay. When I got the aircon re charged the guy had it going otherwise I've never yet heard it running. I've also checked the viscous coupling after hot traffic and I've never felt it locked up. So could be broke I suppose or more likely never been hot enough - yet. Only had it 2.5 years

No the post about it struggling when it got hot, was another post. Nothing to do with that one. It was another guy and it was on his NA 300ZX

I noticed that some one at the North West meet had his stock fan removed. Who's was it. He was on the ramp most of the after noon :(

I think all you need do to prove the electric fan is working is disconnect the temp sensor. Of course you can also do it with a Consult/ConZult.
