Iโ€™ve read a couple of times about early Zeds having dodgy automatic gearboxes (In a buyers guide and also mentioned in a couple of posts in this forum). I just know Iโ€™m going to regret saying this but mine 90 Jap import NA is running fine. What is the problem with them? What should I be looking out for? Any preventative maintenance I can be doing?

many ppl don't change the ATF frequently enough which results in excessive degradation which can damage the gearbox. Auto gearbox can benefit from a better ATF cooler than the stock one which does little ?

I believe someone posted on this forum saying that Nissan had to detune the VG30DETT for the automatic version, as the RE4 auto gearbox couldnt handle the power. (I think its the same type of autobox fitted to the Nissan Maxima!!)

So you can imagine how long they last once the boost is raised!

As mentioned better cooling via a ATF Cooler(approx ยฃ250) and a fast road upgrade such as the type HKS and SE Nissan sell(approx ยฃ1500) will enable more power to be handled without the worry of it going pop!
