Morning all,

 

Just a quick question to ask if the rear hatch struts (little shock absorber looking items that keep the rear hatch open) are the same part for the 2 seater and the 2+2.

 

I need to replace mine as they have now failed and no longer keep the hatch up.

 

AndyZ has a set from a 2+2 but I have a 2 seater and wanted to ask if anyone knew if they will fit (and work).

 

Sorry about the outstanding technical description, but hey, there is a reason why I am a 'Junior' member, lol.

Have you got a standard Nissan spoiler on the back?

 

If so, it might be that this is waterlogged and hence too heavy for the struts rather than the struts failing. I got caught with this, bought 2 new struts and the tailgate still fell on my head until I ditched the old spoiler and fitted a lovely fibreglass one from the ZCentre.

No but seriously though, there were a few a threads about this here. My spoiler paint finish had started to crack and lift with a few bubbles.

 

I spoke to a couple of members - first off was JeffTT - and that was how I found out about the waterlogging. Apparently the original spoiler is some plastic foam-y compound over a steel core support.

 

When the finish cracks, water gets in and starts to rust the support and waterlog the foam. If you just respray the spoiler, lo and behold the bubbles and cracks just recur.

 

Also apparently, you can eventually dry out the spoiler to respray but this is a PITA. SO I was recommended to get a fibreglass pattern one. Which I did. Spoiler itself is fine, fitment was by a bunch of gorillas so is now on the to-do list!

Buzz, a tempory quick fix is to lighten the tailgate, if you remove the plastic cover under the rear wiper area you will see a metal counter balance fixed in place. Remove this ( but keep safe) it will help the struts hold up the hatch until you replace the spoiler etc.

No actually, tho, I have heard this before. Just not before I ordered my new struts / spoiler hehehe learn something new everyday.

 

I would guess that if you do this and the tailgate doesn't stay up, the struts are more probably u/s. If the tailgate does stay up, then the spolier may be waterlogged.

Did you know this piece of metal weighs 1kg??? Exactly the same as the wiper motor it counterbalances.

 

my Z weighs 1749kg now..... ;)
