Hi, my Z seems to have lost its edge, the boost guage runs to 12psi, but I did chcnage it from the jap one to PSI when I did the clocks so it might not be that acurate. But anyway, everything esle is good, mid range etc seem fine, but I think it used to read 14psi before. It doesnt seem to have that "snarl" when I give it some. i dont drive that fast very often.

I know its a bit vague but any thoughts? Or things I could check, what level is "safety boost" not that I think its that, never hear detonation etc. The rest of the car is very good. Help..

Safty boost is 7PSI. You really need an after market turbo gauge to get a true reading. My dash says 14PSI when I know that I am only running stock 9PSI. My after market gauge confirms that I am running at 9.

Lots of people say that their car has lost its edge. But 90% of the time its just that you have got used to the car.

Mark, to a degree I agree with Staurt it is all to easy to "get used " to the power.

However and this is an important point, conscious "gut feeling" is where we differ from machines, a series of set values input and outputed from an ecu can never replace the accuracy that a switched on driver can "feel" Formula one drivers cannot be replaced even with the hi tech equipment they use as how a car feels is more biological than logical.

Right deep thinking over!

Do take a look around the obvious, vaccum pipes, turbo pipes etc for security...use a torch and don`t think it`s a two minute job take your time, check the air filters, Tb`s for build up, the plugs and where you are buying your petrol ( try somewhere else)

What does happen is that these engines are so good at running even when things need attention that an accumalation of required service items can take the edge away.

One comment I hear very regularly is after we have done a cam belt change is the car "The car is running really well" now as part of the belt service the usual service items are most often done too so what the key factor is is not too clear...suppose service, service, service is the answer.

Hope that helps

Thanks Jeff,

I had a feeling I needed an answer from you. I intend on asking you to service it for me at some stage but I am so busy and you so far away, relativly, that I dont know when.

But your answer is what I was thinking, my last fill of fuel was the local Esso, and before that Tesco if I remeber right.

To be honest I am not used to having to remember about which fuel, and I keep meaning to try Opitmax.

I am sure you can relate to this desription, at the moment, the engine works far better if I dont give it full throttle. Part throttle acceleration is good, but when I floor the throttle it almost goes flat. I say almost because it is not flat but does not "roar, or have that certain edge". A term we used to use when cars had points etc. Do you know what I mean?

Is a gut feeling more than anything, as you say in your email.

I read your comments on pipes etc being off, but it is not that bad, although I will look.

So Jeff what do you think about it going faster on part throttle?

Does that ring any bells? Thanks for your time.

Mark

Mark,

Yep know what you mean about the part throttle thing, almost as if it goes slower if you put you foot down, this definately points to a possible weekening of the mixture (vacuum pipe off) or a retarded ignition? having said that poor combustion from low grade petrol will do the same. Find a shell garage quick!!

ECU diagnostic would be a good start ;) Also, maybe worth checking the fuel pump and controller - the ECU can control the fuel pump at two different flow rates - if the flow doesn't increase when its supposed to then the car will feel flat. Check the TPS connection too and that its adjustment is correct.

Thanks Andy, I guess the TPS and ecu info is avail with a search.

I think I might try Opitamax first, after checking for a hose off, as I want to try one fix at a time to find the problem, if there is one. Mark
