Hi folks,

Just joined the ranks of 300zx owners this weekend. Having been envious of a friends '90 jap import non turbo for a good few months I couldn't resist when he gave me first refusal on it. Plan was just to keep it for the summer then sell it on but I'm already starting to feel it may be a much longer relationship than that!!

Anyway, I've got a couple of little niggles with it you guys may be able to help me with.

Firstly, the mirrors both wobble at speed. Is there an easy way to tighten these up or fix it.

Also, odo and trip meters are not working. I have seen a web page by Henri Le Hir that seems to suggest how to fix this problem. Has anyone attampted this? Is it easy enough or am I going to end up with my new pride and joy in bits over the summer?!

Hopefully I will have nothing more serious than these to worry about! Thanks in advance for your help.

David

I think there is a screw where the mirror is joint to the bit on the car. Try screwing that. Also push it and make sure its clipped back into position.

Does the speedo have a converter on it. They are usually the first thing to go, but my speedo packed in a few months after having my Z. I had to get a new dial cluster. :( I got a 2nd hand one.

You will feel less attached to it when you try a TT. :D

My odo and speedo packed up, I followed Henri's instructions and they started working again. Pretty straightforward really. Even if you bust them irretrievably then you should be able to get replacements quite easily.

You mean the actual mirror INSIDE the casing or the WHOLE mirror? If the latter, there are 3 small phillips screws directly underneath the mirror casing body, these may be loose.

Cheers Andy, I'll give the Odo thing a go when I'm feeling brave!

As for the mirrors, the actual glass in the casing is fine. Its the casing itself, where it pivots to fold away (at the flick of a switch - cool! :) ) that seems loose. The three screws seem fine and I can feel no movement on the screws when I wobble the mirror casing about. The very inside screw is very close to my nice red paintwork for working on :(

I knew I had another niggle!

I'm missing the 'z' badge from the centre of the steering wheel. I don't think its effecting performance particularly  but it would really tidy up the inside. Anyone know where I could get one or where there is a scrap Z that would have one available?

Thanks again

That screw is very close to the door, you're right, you have to be careful, lie on the ground and do it maybe? Even then you can only get your fingers on the screwdriver and not your hand wrapped around it. You got a socket set? Put a phillips attachment onto a ratchet and do it that way. It must be these that aren't tight. I've had my mirror to bits and these are the only screws that hold them onto the arm.

Try asking AndyZ in the secondhand parts section about the badge, I think you may have to replace the whole steering wheel though.

I am sure I have seen places that sell them because they has different coloured one like a gold Z on a black background and sinlver on back and silver on red.

I think you'll find that is the 'nose' emblem Stuart, rather than the steering wheel insert. :(

Can I suggest that you use some installation tape to tape up the paintwork surface directly under the mirror.

It can take a few slips of the screw driver and doesn't leave a sticky residue on the door.

cheers, good tip with the tape. I'll give it a go tonight - unless the sun is still out then I may just have to take the roof of and take it for a spin - let the mirrors wobble :)

:D good choice ;)

Silverfox,

For the steering wheel emblem - I replaced mine with the body badge to give it more oomph!!! Looks good. You can get them from the Z Centre in a variety of colours.
