I've just got an engine ECU chip for my TT.

I've been told its a JWT chip, but it doesn't have a JWT label on it.

Is it a copy ??

The chip has a tiny window in it where you can see the internals. Typed on the body of the chip it says.............

Malaysia

Copyright 1986 AMD

It also has lots of letters and numbers that don't appear to mean anything.

What do you think ???????

Should I put it in my car ??????

Thanks

Andy

A pukka chip has a sticky JWT printed label with a serial number usually written by hand. This may have fallen off, so it could be anything really. All the AMD stuff printed on it is just the manufacturer of the device itself, nothing to do with the information it contains (like a cd etc)

Where did you get the chip from, do you trust them? A copied JWT chip is as good as the real thing, its only a load of numbers programmed into a chip. Another point, when people get these chips are they custom programmed with the car on a rolling road or are they supplied as a product.

If they are programmed on a rolling road they might have a legit reason for charging the prices they charge i.e. no two cars are the same. If the chips are all the same they should cost about £2. See the previous post about ECU programming. I've access to a programmer.

Mmmmm, interesting. Is there any real risk in just "giving it a try". Or does anyone know where I could get someone to read the chip to tell me what it really is or programmed to do ??

Help much appreciated.

Thanks

Andy,

Put it in someone else's Z and watch what happens!!:D :D :D

Cheers,

F.T.

If you can get a genuine JWT chip it's an easy job to compare it to your chip to establish if it's the same. Or stick it in the car if it dosen't det and the power is OK and fuel consumption OK then OK.

i would have thought if the chip is no good the car just wouldnt start

If you put in a chip that is either blank or corupted then nothing much will work and the elec fan will come on immediately

Thanks everyone.

AndyP - Can you fix PTU's ??

Thanks

I have done but it's a bit hit & miss. I wouldn't recommend fixing one to sell, only as an emergency measure until a new one could be obtained.
