Against better advice I went down to Ram City Motors, to have a look at the Zeds they have down there. True to for there were 3 dogs, but one that seemed to be in much better nick than the others. Anyway I had a good look around the thing and noticed that the turbo gauges didn't match the ones in the link http://www.300zx.co.uk/tech/BuyingZ.htm The ones in this only went to ±0.7 or ±7 (can't remember which). I'm going back this weekend for a drive, but the link says that the boost should be passed 7 bar region. If it is 7 bar on the dials on this import then surely its underboosting? Anyone else seen this?

Cheers

1 bar = 14.7 psi

the ones you saw were showing pressure in bar units

the ones in the site are using psi units

actuallt the jap ones measure in 100mmHg, 700mmHg is equivelent to about 14psi.

I think you'll find that the J'spec cars boost gauge is calibrated in mmHg and this is quite normal.

1 mmHg = 0.02 PSI

7 mmHg = 0.14 PSI

Quite right Clarkey, I forgot to say multiply up by 100 :D

Right so effectively the full scale deflection is the same, and I should ignore the numbers and make sure that it goes about two thirds or three quarters of the way to the max?

CORRECT!

Oh and don't trust the standard gauge too much, they are notoriously unreliable. If its in SB you will be able to tell very quickly.

Brilliant - this really is a good forum for advice.

Might have a new car by saturday!!! Heh heh heh Bring it on!

If you get a Z by Saturday are you coming the meeting on Sunday?

I know, I'm a lazy twonk, but I'd rather drive it than polish it. :D

Yeah OK good call.

Yeah if you pick it make sure you arrive on Sunday.

Going off the subject, how can you tell if a Z is in safety boost.
