Why does my car have this, whats it meant to do, does any one on here actualy like having it??

Featured Replies

I thnk its summing to do with the 4 wheel steer but it is annoying when the bloody light keeps coming on and you cant findthe reason for it!!!!!

Marc:(

The reason for the light comming on is probably just your power steering being a bit low.

Hicas stands for High Capacity Actively Controlled Suspension, basicaly what it does is in a high speed turn it turns the rear wheels in the opposite directoin to the fronts for a split second then turns them in the same direction, very clever stuff!!

I though it was at low speeds turns the wheels the oposite direction to make the back end swing round, and at high speeds, it turns the same way so the car drifts.

It is usually because you steering fluid is low as b19rks said. You top it up in the green bottle with the black top wit 2 wires, located on the left of the engine.

I think this is from the US advertisting material.

wicked info.

Don't happen to have the next page do you? Starting to talk about suspension dampening which would be interesting.

Sorry mate thats all I have, I cant remember where I got it!

But I believe the last paragraph is discussing the adjustable suspension settings on the US Twin Turbo.

Good reading.

Makes no difference to me, mines been removed. :D

Hi Gavo, I had posted a same problem on this site before.. I had replaced my bushes and checked my suspensions... the car was steady again... till recently I jammed a hard brake into a corner from 250km/h to 140km/h... the HICAS lights came on again... and not related to the HICAS, I screwed up my Ignition Unit...

Now I'm waiting for parts from AndyZ... and at the same time... gonna get a HICAS eliminator.... I heard the car is rock steady after putting in the eliminator... solve all problems of fish tailing and gives a better launch control....

Some had advised that to let the HICAS stays.. but I was wondering why so many aftermarket brands including Stillen had produced the HICAS eliminator for 300zx... should be with a purpose and a logical reason...;)

I heave heard from many different sources and on Skylines who have the HICAS too, that the around a track the car performs better with out it.

There was a very long article on TwinTurbo.net about it a while ago, where some one set out to see if there was a difference, and not prove that its better without it, so it was unbias. He found the car went better round the track without it.

Also I read a on a site about a Skyline R33 in Australian used for amature racing I think. They spent a day on the track with it, and for the last couple of laps they turned off the HICAS, via the fuse, and where over 1/2 a second faster on their first attempt and further laps improved even more.

But for more practical uses, HICAS is a good thing. When you gonna go on a track and is it worth the money for just 15-20 you may get on a track a year.

Personally - I'd leave it on - you can just disable it and the system locks the rear wheels up straight......

Nissan put it on for a reason - it helps high speed manouvering and stability of the car - take it off for a track day by all means but I'd leave it alone for road driving.

would be great if someone can share on how to disable the HICAS.. Thanks...

Is there any way of putting it on a switch so you can have it on for every day driving but turn it off for track use?

There is a USA road & track test where the TT with goes through a slalom quite a bit faster than the NA without HICAS and it might even have beaten the Vette it was being compared with. Cant remember for sure. Personally I like the sharp turn in feel when you steer fast. I think its a sound idea but yes it adds weight, complexity and more bits to wear out. So if its worn at all your rear is going to feel a bit inaccurate.

Also the adjustable rear shocks are on UK zeds as well. Search handbrake trick!

I know its clever and a good concept but after my na not having it and now im in tt which does, i can honestly say so far i would prefer not to have it it has no probs or faults and appears to work exactly as it should but seems less "planted" than my last one, i can feel ever so slightly the back end movig in, when i want it out?? i will try it for longer till i make my mind up but so far it feels less of a drivers car

From what you described I'd check your shocks aren't worn.

You should really not be able to feel the effect of the HICAS unless you are pushing on, its only a couple of degrees of shift.

HICAS does have a very interesting pendulum action if you get a zed into a skid, I experienced this on a country lane late one evening. I caught the skid and the HICAS helped me out and hey presto I'm catching it the other way! - Needed clean Calvin's after that one :D

Nice set of pics Tim.:D :D

Who's Z is that then?  ;)

Cheers,

I will but doubt its shocks as i can feel it doing what its reported to do, get your z into a sixty or so mph drift and you will see what i mean, your trying to keep it out and hicas is trying to bring u back, me not like that
