Hi, I notice over the weekend that my front tyres were cracking in between the tread, other than that the tyres look like new, with loads of even tread, is this seriously dangerous, or is it just surface cracks. The tyres are brigestone zr grip II and are no older than 3 years. Would like to hear if any one could shed some light on this, because if I go into a tyre shop they just might scare

the crap out of me for a set of new tyres.

Thanks for any advise.

Tony

3 Years for tyres on a Z? Do you hover everywhere ;)

How you mean cracks? Cracks as in the tyre has dried and thus cracked?

You can get small splits in the tyre, these are just where stones or glass have split the tyres slightly. As long there is not air escaping there is no problem.

hover everywhere haha!! that made me smile :)

The back ones I've changed but the front ones are the same. There just cracks all over the tread area. As you said Cracks as in the tyre has dried and thus cracked?

It's just the rubber starting to perish, wouldn't worry about it too much. Just drive it more, then you'll soon need new ones ;)

Hi Tony.. do check out some local accessories store.. I've seen them selling this spray/wipe on to patch cracks on tyres...

If they are Jap spec tyres, the cracks are caused by our climate being harsher on the Jap spec rubber. Not un-safe as far as I know, but have seen some where they crack down to the belts (on Eunos not 300 mind you).

Now you must be joking !

maybe I've mistaken product usage.. it was from MOTUL products.. a kind of emergency spray for cracks that cracks bigger... tot would be good if Tony keeps one in the boot..:p

Arnt Jap spec tyres illegal over here?

No, not on cars over 10 years old, i.e. that don't need SVA approval, and often not on cars less than 10 years old.

as said, tyres do perish with age, dunplops used to be the worst for this iirc. as long as the're not down to the cords you should be ok. just keep an eye on them to make sure they dont get any worse

BIG THANKS To you all,

maybe I should drive it harder and more often. Might just ask at the local tyre shop just incase and see what they have to say.

Thanks again

Tony.
