Well, surpsrise, surprise.

I go to pick the car up from the gearbox place and they have managed to sort the boost problem but tell me my radiator is duff, so my first question is:

Where can I get a rad and is it easy to fit? Prices etc?

Secondly, coming home gave the car a bit of a rag, not too much but a little and then the boost turns right down to 0psi and the car has no pick up at all. After about 5 mins I start to hear a rattle, and my missus who is behind me tells me there smoke coming from my passenger side exhaust. F**K!!!

I stop when I get home, life the bonnet and when I press the throttle it sounds like a bag of nails! Guessing passenger turbo is wan*ed!

So, believe it or not this comes as no surprise because I am now convinced that I am not supposed to have a 300zx. This is no word of a lie, 1 single day has not passed when I have had a problem with the nissan, HONEST!!! Now, what is this reliability shite that everyone raves about because I just dont see it!!!

Even so, I am going to get the car running even if I end up with a brand new one by changing every single part!

So question, Where can I get a new turbo from? How much?, do I have to buy both sides? Is this advised?

[sIGH] Sorry if I sound fed up but I am........

:(

Or, on the bright side could I get bigger turbos??:)

Jaylox (Jayson) on http://www.z32.co.uk is doing a group buy on turbos at the moment and they are uprated. Check it out and see how much you can get them for.

As for the radiator, I got mine re-cored for just over £100, which is a lot better than the £400 ish for a new radiator. Its really easy to take out. 2 screws on top, 2 under neath, take off the 2 pipes and unclip the fan cover and it will pull out from the top. 20 min job if that.

I think you are unlucky about your car. Most people have problems with it but they are usually just minor ones which you would expect from a 12 year old car. Then there are people who have no end to thier troubles but once its sorted its sorted for a long time. ;)

Hi stuart,

Yeah nothing but problems since day 1. But like you say, I am sure that once the problems are ironed out the car will become reliable.

I guess the problem is with buying a 13yr old car is that you dont know the condition, and even if you did strip it down fully, could you really tell?

Well, I have seen Jasons ads on Z32 so I will find out what I can get. Maybe this is the excuse I need for bigger turbos!!! Diddnt want to have to cough up yet but such is life!!

The recoring job on the rad? Where can I get this done?:)

It was a local place in Wigan that did it. There are probably places that can do it near you. Just look in your Yellow Pages, or at http://www.yell.co.uk.

Search for Car Radiator and then your town or local major town to find one.

They dont recore it with Aluminum though which I wasnt bothered about anyway. So what its 2lb heavier, it does the job and well.

its very cheap from memory

Your Price: $139+ delivery

Unfortunately, unless you've blown a turbo hose off, it sounds like you have a turbo gone west :( I had this - it seized the drivers side one completely. Engine out to replace - there ARE garages that do them 'in-car' but you can't be guaranteed of getting the correct torques on the hard to reach bolts etc. Also, if you are going for bigger turbos then I certainly WOULD pull the engine as often some of the oil and water feeds need reworking to fit the new housings....

Well if it is a turbo gone south then dont drive the car at all, if your impellor blade has broken up, there is a very strong chance piece ofit can get inside the engine. I have been there done that and it ended up costing me a motor.

Jesus wept!!! Feel for you mate...

After mine looked like it had gone seriously seriously wrong I was looking at rebuild job and some new turbo's.. the idea was if I have to spend money on it, I'll spend it in the right places...

' j300zxturbo'

Thanks for the advice on the rad, does seem very cheap that and if it is better than the existing then thats even better. I will call them tomorrow.

'andyduff'

I am thinking of just going for standard turbo but with 360 degree thrust bearings and stronger internals. I guess it makes sense to swop them both out if the engine has to come out??

'300z'

I did drive it very slow coming back, I thought that if I did try and push it and parts fo the turbo got inside the cylinders I would have to scrap the car!!!! Cus I dont have £7500 for a new lump!!!

Lee,

Nightmare hey, like I told you, I am jinxed. I am 99% sure that its the turbo although jeff has given me a way to test if the turbo is doing its job. It seems as though I am always battling against the car to keep it running rather than have time to improve it!!

'All'

Getting quotes through now of arounf £1700 fitted (standard) surely there is a cheaper alternative!!!! If not, I will use my 2-ton trolley jack and take it out myself!!!!

Contact Smithy for the turbo's, pretty sure he was doing the best deal around.

Vijay

You can get a very good set of Garrett GT25BB turbos which are awesome for around £1700 all inclusive of delivery ect, they are rated at a proper 320 bhp per turbo.

last time i spoke to him, he was doing a pair of hybrids for £1k (plus fitting of course :) ) IIRC

Two hybrids fitted £1000!!

I'll have it done NOW!!!!

How can I get hold of this guy??

I believe you'd be looking at £600-£700 for fitting. Most garages charge 6 to remove a lump, at lease that's what I found when I had to do my blowers.

CRAP!!

So unless I fit them myself, I am looking at £100 minimum!!!

I diddnt realise turbos were this much to replace, not many people talk about them much on here! I take it it isnt that common a problem.

I'd check it hasn't simply thrown a hose off first ;)

Will check the turbo prob after reconning the head for me 3rd car, little mint xr2........

Pretty sure it is shagged though as theres a very loud rattle when you throttle.:(
