On the autobox what is the inhibitor switch, how does it work and what happens if it goes wrong????

Featured Replies

I'd guess it's that little red bit behind the gear lever. It's prevents you putting the car into gear unless you have engine running, brake on etc. The red switch disables it.

If you push or pull it down, you can put it in to gear withou the engine being on like if you needed to move it, you could put it in neutral

Unless they've changed the terminology on these cars, the inhibitor switch is what stops you from starting the car in gear ;)

And if it does the same job as on my old 24v cosworth the car can on occasions decide to cut out!;)

Good point, been talking at cross purposes here !

I'll get me coat ....

The troubleshooting guide for an autobox that wont shift from 2 to 3rd is check #1, check the inhibitor switch.

DOes anyone know exactly where it is located???

I was on about the little lever on the side of the gear knob on a auto, looks like a match and if i push itm, it lets me put the car in n so i can push it

I thought the inhibitor switch was only on J-Spec Autos and was the 3-way rocker switch that lets you adjust the way the box behaves? At least it was when I had the part priced at Middlehursts dealers at about ยฃ45!

I might be wrong tho.....

Remove half the dashboard to gain access to the inhibitor switch. Bit of a bugger!
