Hi,

Dropped the heads off today to get them Ported+polished and the guy rang Piper Cams to ask about reprofiling the cams!

He said the cost would be about 250 if they could do anything, has anybody had any experience of this?

Thanks for the feedback Macca,

Not doubting they are bad news but why?

From my limited knowledge, I believe that reprofiling cams involves metal spraying the lobes of the existing cams, recutting the revised profiles and then tuffriding the whole lot creating case hardening.

I agree with Mac, reprofiling is not ideal, but how many people are going to stock Z32 cam blanks? Could it be a case of source some from the US in either blank form or pre-cut?

What are the beneifts weighed against the cost for cam upgrades, does the Zed really respond that well. I know some engines respond well from a cam change - Rover V8, 3.5 cam change will give 15bhp over standard for example.

As an aside, why are the two major UK cam manufacturers based in Kent? I'm 10 mins from Piper Cams (Ashford) and 20 from Kent Cams (Folkestone)?

Tim

It's not always necessary to spray metal on.

There is often enough metal on the existing cam to gain more lift and duration. Eg the CA exhaust cam has enough metal to copy HKS profiles on to it.

Personally, if they can do it without adding metal then i'd do it, but adding metal sounds ropey as feck to me.

To tell you the truth Piper said they would have to see the cams to determine whether they would be able to work on them!!

I am dubious as even the engineer said they are a highly tuned engine to start with and is 50/50 if it would benefit!
