Hi guys,

Can anyone help at all cus my car feels really slow, well standard boost anyway (BORING)......

Not trying to start trouble here, but it's been chipped and now it's in safety boost ?!? WTF ?

"Safety boost" will be reset to normal each time the ignition is turned off/on.

You need to do an ECU diagnostic - my bet is you get a code 34 :( Detonation circuit error.

Errrrr hang on, what did the garage do to your car????

Likely Det errors like Andy says!

Was that after you got it back from Jeff's? Same day as me?

  • Author

no no, this is ever since i got i back from the garage last night.

They fitted a recon gearbox oil pump and torque convertor.....

So it shouldnt be abkle to go into safety boost when its chipped?:(

Maybe the b****rds stole my ECU!!!!

oooooh that'd be evil!!! is it likely though?!?! presumably Jeff would be able to tell if it's a different ECU!

Where's the car now then?

Yes it can go into safety boost when it's chipped.

I think Andy was trying to find out whether it was the chipping and boost upgrade that's caused the problem.

Have a scan around the engine bay - check they haven't disconnected something like the det sensor harness and left it off. Hope they haven't damaged the harness when they removed the gearbox - it runs down the back of the engine so a possibility :(

Hi,

Just got back from job interview!!!! Took the 300ZX and touch wood the starting problem seems to be vanashing although I am sure that near the start I can smell petrol???? Any ideas?

Anyway, back to the no real decent power problem, I called Jeff this morning and spoke to him about it and he advised that they have plugged the sensors in the wornt connectors at the back of the middle of the engine. Make sense? I checked these and the wires that jeff told me diddnt correspond with mine, so I thought thats got to be the problem. But, when I put the phone down and tried to change them over, one of them wont reach the female, so they must eb the right way round?? WTF!!!!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd get it up in front of Jeff if I were you... let him figure out what the problem is there and then? does it run?

  • Author

Yeah runs fine, although there is a weird sound coming from the gearbox side after some rag???? Not sure whether I am 100% happy with this job yet??? But if it goes on that then I'll take it back!!!

On the running side, runs like I guess a srtandard 300ZX but its missing a bit!!!

Like

When its running full boost normally I can get the back end to step right out even on a dry day as theres too much power. Today, I had to do it going through some traffic light and turning a bend, as thats the only time I can get her arse out (excuse the phrase!)......

Sorry, I just love getting me arse out.....:D

But I want my boost back, the car seems normal now, nothing special.......:(

Generally find it quite easy to slide the Z in the dry! Everytime I do though I remember how much the tyres cost and behave myself for a bit :)

Might want to get your gearbox checked out again then if you're worried... let Jeff or somebody drive it and see what they think? Mine was lovely and smooth when it came back.. but that was with an almost 100% new gearbox + new oil cooler...

If you need a hand with anything give me a shout, still owe you for the lift!

  • Author

Thanx lee, I'll bear that in mind...;)

Gonna call jeff I think and ask for more advice as I use the sam eamount of fuel, just not as quick..!?!?!!?

Sounds like they swapped the Det sensor and the VTC solenoid connectors round to me ;) Damn can't remember the colour codes for the VTC erm..... If it don't reach, maybe the connector is attached to the wrong clip - I presume they are on the plenum and not just dangling free....

Can you take a pic?

  • Author

Hi Adny,

Yeah I can take a pic but cus I aint paid I cant attach files.

I must get round to doing that!!!

Is there any other way around it????

Ok, what colours are the wires going into the loom side connector, that is connected to the WHITE lead?

  • Author

Right, got some pics, give us ur mail address and I'll send them through......

to the white sheefed connector there is a red/black and green/black wire.

btw, I have just swopped them over and took it for a rag and its even slower!!!!!!:( (6psi or under) and then I stopped, swopped them back over and it went back up to 7psi+, WTF is going on please help!!!!

RIGHT!!!!!!

I do have a code 34 but now I also have a water leak from somewhere? WTF.

I phoned the garage and told them I have ******* had enough............and that they need for their own sake to ger it sorted!!

I have had NOTHING, I mean NOTHING but bad luck with this car, I just want to drive the damn thing....why oh why cant I get through one day without a problem............WHY?

  • 1 month later...

Did a search for safety boost and came up with this.

Andy, I think I've got the same problem.

The car finally came back from being repaired for my water leak today and I just picked it up an hour ago.

Basically they took the gearbox out to get to the hose, managed to replace 8 others (I got the kit if you remember), and replaced the clutch which I supplied.

Pressure tested it, ran it, no more leaks, no damage to water pump or gasket.. so that's good.

Thing is it now runs really rough on idle.. sort of spluttery.. you blip the throttle and it rocks the car from side to side like it's running on 5 cylinders.

I gave it a good run in case the plugs had just got gunked up (been in my garage for 3 months), and at speed it's just lacking power. My boost gauge is registering boost (up to 7 or so on the mm mercury guage) but it's clearly not the full shilling.

Just like 300ZX_Newbie I can stick my foot to the floor in 1st or second and it just pulls away.. on a wet road !!! no wheel spin.

The boost is showing, and it's quick compared to a mundano or summit, but it ain't 300 horses.

the worrying thing was when I got back to the house there was smoke coming from back of engine where they have been fiddling.. smelled like summit burning. It's gone out thank god... hopefully just some bit of tape or something they put round the exhuast or something...and it's still all spluttery.. really black exhuast.. like it's running really rich or something ?

anyway, just tried to start it (after the smoke stopped), and it doesn't start.. no ignition at all, just like no fuel. wtf.

Could all this be explained by the det sensor harness ? and if so, where is it, what does it look like so I can get em to sort it...

damn.. thought it was gonna finally be back on the road after 3 months :-(

stu

right, as per ecu posts, it was a 13 and a 34.

turns out they had swapped the plugs round.. what genius was working at nissan that thought of that gem.. two identical plugs next to each other. fu**wit.

anyway, now it's an all clear 55.

However... still don't start :-(

since I had my blast, and parked it in the drive, it now won't start.

Engine is still roasting hot after 3 hours, so will try it again tomorrow morning.. but dunno why that will help.

It has never ever ever had a problem starting before. Now it's just turning over..

no sparks or no fuel is all I know to check, and since the sparks are all coil per cylinder and the fuel pump is unlikely to have just stopped working it seems unlikely...

is there another plug or cable around top of plenum somewhere that controls the sparks or fuel pump ? that seems to be the most

likely thang ??

stu

Hi Stu,

Check all the coilpack connectors are pushed down fully. Check the connectors are fully secure and clean on the ptu. Also check the CAS connector ;)

Try those for now...

HTH

CheerZ,

Andy

Right, follow up is that it started this morning.

It sounded ok at first, so I took it out for a round the block job.

good news is that it is now running full boost, and spinning wheels like crazy through 1/2 as it should.

however throttle response is gubbed.

if you are off the throttle and go on it, or even on the throttle a bit, and push down a bit more, the engine revs die then catch, making it really jerky.

back at the house I let it idle, and it's idle is all over the shop.

If I blip the throttle directly on the engine a tiny bit, the engine nearly dies.. then catches. everytime.

However, it ain't rocking the car from side to side, so all the cylinders are working now (must have been the retarded timing with the code 34 that was causing that)

Also, when it catches you get a cloud of black smoke from exhausts ( which are very black). not blue smoke.

I stopped it, started it again, and this time the idle was like... 2K...0.1K...1K...2K.. etc...etc. all over the shop.

even when/if it settles if you listen to the exhuasts it's not smooth... you get a sort of brrrrrrrrrrr ba brrrrrrrrrrrrr ba ba brrrrrrrr ?

so... hopefully something else has not been reconnected properly or maybe a vacuum pipe split a bit when they half removed the plenum, then replaced it ? any ideas ?

So, think the coil packs are probably all ok now, as I say, what is a CAS connector and where is it ?

also, bloke at work is suggesting it could be worth doing a compression test ?

remember the cause of this was getting a water pipe fixed that had burst, and when it burst, it caused steam everywhere and obviously the engine to get really hot.

now that it's fixed and running, is it possible that it got so hot before when very little water in it that it's warped something ??

head gasket seems ok (no water in oil or oil in water)

so I'm more inclined to think it's something they have not reconnected properly, but thought it was worth asking

no one got any ideas what this could be ?

The workshop has no idea where to start.. was kinda banking on one of the Z gurus to know what it was....

stu

black smoke is unburned fuel.

together with the rough idle, it seems some cylinders are not getting a good spark.

So as Andy said, check the PTU, coilpacks and sparkplugs

90% of the problems like you describe are caused by bad and corroded connectors and wiring...so wiggle the connectors of the coilpacks/PTU/AFM and tempsensor to see if idle improves.

If it does you have found the cause.

It also might be worthwhile to connect a consult/conzult to the car and see if some sensors are registering faulty values.
