The oil should be fine for years on end. Its all sealed so nothing gets in or out.

The noise is most probably the syncromesh, as its all the gears that the top of the stick.

I would say its a bearing noise.

Cant be the syncros, they make no noise it only gets hard to put in the gear that has a broken one.

MMMmmmm conflicting views,n e one else have an idea....

syncro's would only make a noise when changing gear, like a crunching sound - it sounds more like bearings to me. prob layshaft if it goes in 4th but you may as well replace all the bearings if your gonna do a rebuild.

I had this when I first got mine.

Turned out the rubber boot at the bottom of the gear stick was not seated properly, so it didn't cover the hole in the floor when the stick was forward, but did when it was back. Amazing how much noise it actually stops!

Was relieved as hell when I found out that's all it was.

Yep - sometimes the boot can split too - it opens up when the gear stick is forwards. Another (small) possibility is that it is the shifter bushing - not the easiest job in the world but certainly DIY - just fiddly.

1st 3rd & 5th noisy... 2nd & 4th quite. My money is that the top rubber boot has slipped off of the lower boot at the back end. Therefore everytime you put it in an "up" gear it pulls the boot forward. Try this. Put it in 1st 3rd or 5th when you are driving and then put pressure on the leather grommet at the base of the shifter. Does the noise go away ? If so then you ned to refit your boots.
