Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittt ............... SPLOSH! (long)

So, do I laugh with glee, cry like a baby or do it the old fashioned way and just go up the pub and get drunk?

Firstly, thanks to 300Z for the contact details on the Mines distributors in the UK. I hope you get your Z sorted out soon!

I just got of the phone to Option Motorsport in Silverstone. I spoke to what sounded like their head mechanic, a Japanese guy. He says that it is not the Mines ECU causing the problem (see previous post to see the problems that I have been experiencing). Apparently, this ECU should run comfortably with Super unleaded 97/98 Ron. The reason why my local mechanic could not gain access to the settings to check and re-map them is because access is locked on the Mines chip. This is because they do not want the setup to be copied. Anyway, I was told that I had a faulty knock sensor ages ago(result from a consult test). I was also told that this would do no harm it just means that if there is knocking the car will not go into safety mode. Hence why I have never seen safety boost despite detonation. WRONG! Bloody mechanics (more than 1 told me this). A faulty sensor/connection doesn’t mean that the car will still run OK nor does it mean that it will run permanently in safety mode. But, the ECU will make certain changes if is detects a fault, just not always safety boost, retarded timing etc. There are many other contributory factors. So, I have a major PITA getting it sorted. If its the sensor its self then its game over rover. They told me that they will rig the diagnostics equipment up CORRECTLY and do a full diagnostics of the problem (sure to be the det sensor though) and... they will only charge me one hour’s labour even if it takes longer. What scary is they really know what they are talking about and the truth can sometimes hurt. Auto box is being re-done next week and it’s going to Option Motorsport for its Judgement Day the following week.

Many thanks to the guys that offered to sort out a replacemnt ECU/EPROM. I think that it would be better to wait a couple of weeks and see what the outcome is.

Finally, we may be getting there.....

Yours 'driving very slowly at the moment,

Andy

Yes,

Your faulty sensor could cost a bit of cash getting it replaced (labour). You should try and go for that option so your car can still detect knocking.

But, it is not the only option. Several people in the states just disconnect it and put a resistor on the end to give the ECU an okay message. The down side is that you have to listen out for knocking and your car will not be able to listen for it.

Another option, which is not so good, the ECU can be set to not detect knocking, but this is also not reccomened. (Ie, you could probably request this from JWT and various other chip people).

Us people with after market boost adjustors have a similar problem, our cars may detect knocking and get set into saftey mode, but the boost pressure will not get reduceded, only the timing gets put back, taking away loads of power. But, it still helps.

Have fun???,

Jez.
