Knock sound from front of car

Hi,

I've got a knock sound/feeling coming from the front of my ZX TT.

It's gradually getting more frequent and happens when I break and then lift off the brake pedal or just as I start pulling away.

I recently had replacement front pads in the hope that this would stop the noise, but it's not made any difference.

Cheers,

Andy

Yeah - it sounds and feels as though it's right under the drivers footwell. It just driven it and it's getting even worse!

It seems to be related to turning the wheel when driving slowly too.

Cheers,

Andy

Could well be loose tie bars/torsion bars - whatever you want to call 'em. Have you changed the bushes or still on the goo filled Nissan numbers...?

Cheers!

upper suspension links

the worn bushes allow the upper arm to crack as the rubber inn the middle of the bush rolls over and dies :)

big bucks each

luke from Z centre is getting a kit in that u can press into the oringinal arms and save loadsa doh !!!

scottie :)

Check the tie bar bolts first ;) As Rob said if these aren't tight, the lower wishbones will move backwards and forwards under different loads. As this happens they hit the limit of their travel which is what you hear. Best bet if you think it is the top links, is to jack each wheel up and try moving it backwards and forwards with a hand at the top and bottom of the wheel. A fair amount of movement IS allowed on the top links due to the design. My money is on the tie bar bolts ;)

Thanks everyone. I went to see the guy that works on my Z and he says that the noise is actually coming from the back of the car (I'm going deaf).

He checked the front arms and they were fine though there is some play where the steering column joins the rack. Is it a big job to replace the joint?

He thinks the clunk is down to my rear HICAS arms being worn at the joint and therefore showing movement. Does that make sense?

Cheers,

Andy

hicas arms wear on the inside joint .. they are dead easy to replace.

then just take it to get lined !!! hopefully end of probs...

does the car not hop stragely from the back, over potholes etc ....

mine was and thats when i found out what the prob was ....

thanks to the knowledge on this forum :)
