I am using s-unleaded with castrol octane booster which has stopped the detonation. Is this OK to use? I know anything has to be better than detonation but does anyone know of any long term problems that this might cause. Besides the stuff being bloody expensive.

Octane boosters are a good temporary solution, but you may get the odd spark plug fouling problem. Using 104+ I've seen plugs go a funny red-orange colour, nothing like the nice tan colour they should be. Can't say whether it's good or bad for the engine.. but hey it's better than burning a ringland! When using the NOS octane booster {race formula} I found the engine stopped all preignition but a couple of times it missed badly on cold starts, one time it sounded like it had dropped 2 or 3 cylinders! But came right after a minute or so.

 

You should notice though that your car would've got some nice pickup in acceleration, mid range engine response should be lot crisper..

Yeah it's just a temporary thing until we get that nasty-ass MINES chip removed from his ECU board! My ecu guru reckons he can remove the epoxy from the chip to get it off the board so we've just gotta organise it..

 

Oh if I were living over there**, we'd have it sorted in no time

 

(then again I would be paying 5 times my insurance premium and 2.5 times the amount for petrol so maybe not..)

You gotit. NASTY-ASS Mines chip causing the problem. Rowan, car insurance is a sore subject at the moment. It has just been announced that all premiums in the UK are to rise 25% OUCH.... just turned 25 yrs with a modified Z, 3 yrs no claims, ex Motorcycle instructor etc etc and I still get taken from behind by insurance co's. When will these guys realise that the last thing a dedicated Z owner (who has spent thousands modifying their car) wants to do is wrap their car around a tree. Yeah, we all have a blast around now and again but I am definitely not the irresponsible dipstick that goes racing around built up areas or races full stop for that matter! We have race tracks for that.

 

Sorry about the morning gripe... and sorry to those that have crashed their Z lately!

 

I will get a photo of the chip on the ECU e-mailed to you as soon as I can Rowan. I have found that the octane booster has stopped the detonation , made the car rev cleaner at the higher revs but I feel that it has lost power although it revs cleaner? especially at the higher revs - revs cleaner but less power Ugh?

Detination...

 

Still check your timing doesn't go past 15deg... if you are still getting detination a VERY good tempurary fix would beto move it back to 14 or 13deg...

anders i have to disagree about the nasty mines ecu, as from what i have heard and read they are the best modifiers of ecus in japan, (just what i have heard as i also have a mines ecu)

i still dont know if im getting detonation but i obviously am as i burnt plugs in italy running on that shit fuel.

im in south africa at the moment and the guys over here swear buy the octane booster (the nos one)

there are cars running here ie a 200sx with a larger turbo intercooler and higher boost (done the manuial way) with octane booster doing 12 sec on the quartermile at 1.500 metere altitude that is really quick.

there was a guy there the other day with a twin turbo porshe doing 10 sec quartes also swearing by the nos octane booster i am gonna get a price for it as it is cheap here, when i have ill let you know,

maby we split a box of 5the stuff lol
