Can you get Detonation at low RPM say 2-3k

Featured Replies

yes you can.

more audiable at low RPM less at hi, but still can be detting even if you cant hear it.

sounds like nuts and bolts in the engine.

Just out of interest, how do you go about sorting it out and what causes it ?

Took the words right out of my mouth SMW1

Not sure if its detting or not the car is not going into safty boost at all. Does not quite sound like nuts and bolts in a tin but like quiet pinking , perhaps i am just paranoid

Hmm...

I think I used to suffer from this. A very faint knock, seemed to come from passenger side front. It's done this for a while and now my AIVs have started to gurgle at idle - I think there may be a link, maybe a small amount of water, just enough to splash about when at low revs but not enough to gurgle at idle... I'm pretty sure it isn't detting. Didn't Jez have something like this too??

I'm gonna try the AIV 'drill a hole' fix and see if the noise goes away - when I get my car back on the road (gearbox swap).

Cheers!

You haven't recently changed your downpipes for non-cat ones have you ?

Mine's made a noise a little like pinking ever since I did mine !

Despite the consult readings saying everything was ok I got paranoid about it and fitted an in-line octane booster just to make sure but the noise is still there. Bob Ford assures me it's just the breather pipes which have nowhere to connect to on my aftermarket downpipes, and that there's nothing to worry about !

RK Tuning sell dash mounted detonation sensor/warning devices I think made by HKS - call 02083484218.

I think I am right in saying you can hook up a set of headphones and listen out for the knock too.

Not worth the risk if you are not sure IMO, get a dashmount knock sensor alerter, might help you:)

There's a simple circuit you can build to show when the stock det sensor is active.

Think the diagram is on the zhome?? Site. I'll try and find the link later

Konrad I have just recently de-cated the car and now you mention it i did not notice this noise before that

Thanks for the info on the dash Det sensor aswell guys

Nice to have the site working again :D

detonation is caused by the gasses being ignited in the combustion chamber other than by the spark plug, due to increases in temp/pressure causing the air/fuel mix to ignite. this causes a seperate burn to the one ignited by the spark plug, when the 2 flame fronts collide you get the "knocking" or pinking noise.

it can be caused by running high boost pressures, incorrect fueling/timing, carbon build up, poor or low quality (octane) fuels.
