I know it's been said here before but I now know first hand how crap the stock temp gauge is. My car decided to lose it's coolant yesterday and I was shocked when the temp gauge went from normal driving temp to very near the maximum in a matter of about 15-20 seconds while I was doing a steady 60. Luckily for me I managed to pull over and I don't think any serious damage has been done. I just couldn't believe how quickly it moved!

I would recomend everyone go out and get an aftermarket temp gauge so you can have some sort of warning if your car overheats. That's next on my list (well after a timing kit:( ).

Vijay i have the Blitz dc series guage

DCWHITE.jpg

it works in degree incraments and has been a lifesaver for me , especially after i had an overheating problem.

first of dont be to sure you never damaged your heads, because if your temp went over 117 degrees, rest assured you fried your heads.

we had a conzult (erics) on my car and it was showing well over 100 degrees and the stock temp sender hadent budged yet.

since i have had mine plummed in (blitz supply a fantastic temp sender unit with the guage) i have a rock steady way of checking how hot my engine got even after i have switched it of (no higher than 90 degrees to date) well worth getting a stepping guage as its a means of recording your temp.

Hello Warren,

Is there any symptoms that would tell me if I've done any damage? It idles and drives (very short journey) fine.

Also, what's a stepper gauge? Does it just record the max it's hit until reset?

Cheers

Vijay

well from my experience, my car showed no smudge or oil in the water ect. But suffice to say, go get a sniffer test done, they put a thing in your exhaust lol (words fail me) and they can tell if water is in your exhaust gasses.

a stepping guage records peak temp/boost/pressure ect, and if you have it plummbed in like i had mine, even after you switch the car of, it will still record peak temp (as you get heat soak)

it has a record finction ect,

well worth getting in my opinion (even though they are more expensive)

get a conzult to check aswell, great in determining the real temperature.

My Z overheated at the end of last summer after losing all water. The gauge was pretty much at the top of the scale and I assumed that the engine would be knackered. I had it checked out and no problem. Maybe I was just lucky. :D

Cheers Warren.

Just been looking at some gauges, do you know the normal working temp and at what temp is it overheating?

117 degrees is max i think , then things go wrong.

normal operating temp is around 80-85 degrees...

would not go higher than 105 and shut it down.

in traffic after ten minutes mines sitting at around 90 never goes higher while driving.

im about to fit a racing rad and thermostat, ill make records with that aswell.

excuse the ignorance but is that degress C or F?

Vijay

It will be ºC.

80ºF is not even hot enough for a cup of tea, let a lone water thats used to cool a 300ZX.

Hmmmmm cup of tea...... Hmmmmm, BRB ;)

warren. do you mean that the blitz sender replaces tthe original sender? in which case the standard nissan guage is now redundant and you just use your blitz guage....

or from what i can gather from your post, you use the new guage awell as your old one..

i'm just confused as you say since fitting the blitz the temp has not gone above 90, seeing hows you measured over 100 with the conzult then one of them is highly inaccurate, ie the blitz guage (as it now reads 90) or the conzult?(as it did read over100)

No i fitted it next to the stock sender.

ill take a pic in the morning.

100 degrees was on conzult when i had damaged heads.

guage fitted after i had sorted the engine out.

Stock guage does not move until around 100 degrees or above.

I second that. My after market gauge moves between 70ºC and 85ºC and the stock one doesnt even budge.

This is exactly why I would never sell my Techtom. Yesterday when the battery was flat after the car had been standing for so long (my fault for not disconnecting it!) and we jumped it to start it first thing I did was check the battery voltage via the Techtom. Bang on and charging.

Temperature has been a life saving feature aswell, I know within a split second if my car is starting to overheat and I can prevent the inevitable happening long before it gets to the point where the stock gauge even moves!

At Trax last summer when we got stuck in traffic waiting to get in we could see the temp rising slowly and I slammed the heater on full bore and could watch the temperature drop as a result.

However, I looked up the stock gauge in the handbook only last week and normal operating temperature is between the bottom and second to top line. Only if the needle hits the top has the car properly overheated. ;)

Therefore if you manage to stop or get the heater on before the needle hits the top of the gauge you should be OK.
