Hi Guys,

Since the series 1 PTU is prone to failing, does anyone know if a series 2 PTU fits on a '90 300zx without any problems ?.

I'vebeen told by a reliable source that my misfiring when warm may be the PTU on its way out.

Or does anyone enjoy fixing broken PTU's :D.

:(

A 2nd hand one in the UK will cos you £100. A new series II PTU from courtesy Nissan in the US will cost you the same

The difference is not Series I / II as such, but the later model PTU does fit with no problem - assuming that you get the adaptor bracket with it. (which Courtesy provide as part of the package).

I have tried fixing PTU's, but it's tricky and I was less than 100% successful.

So it's a stright swap over then, no new loom or reconfiguring required ?

Why are the old ones so much money if they are unrealiable ?

The kit from Courtesy Nissan also includes a loom adapter for the different plug and socket types.

The new ones are not available in the UK. The recall and new alternative was only made available to the US market.

hmmm, Thanks guys,

Do you think my problem with the misfireing when warm is definatley the PTU ?. I don't want to order one and find that it's something else :(.

Is there anyway to check without swapping it over ?.

I may just take it off open it up and get the tweezers out for a tug, what do you think ?

I've got a spare I could lend you.

Getting a new updated one would be a smart long term move though.

Yeah you're probably right. A new one wouldn't hurt I suppose.

I've learnt so much on here since I've had this car it's unreal.

Thanks peeps.

The PTU supplied by Nissan UK is the new series 2 type but costs about £320!

From Courtesy it works out at about £130 if I remember rightly and mine arrived 2 days later (the same time Nissan UK quoted me!)

chris - I gave my local nelson dealer the part no for the series 2 PTU & they dont even list it!!

$159 from courtesy

& i repaired mine to keep me on the road. :)

When I spoke to Ripoff UK last year they said the part number was the same as the old one but it was listed as an updated/replacement item.

Well I'll get a newone probably and repair the old (if it needs it). That way I can always lend it to someone if they thing theirs has gone.

Stu,I got a good one if you need to try it,let me know if you want it sending bud;)

Hmm...

My PTU cost me $178.45 about 10 months ago and fedex $43.85 (I had an oil switch on the order too)

You can have a bash at repairing it yourself or at least checking if that's the problem. Use a dremel type cutting tool to carefully cut the back open and see if you can gently lift the terminals off the posts - if you can it's b*ggered. The two main posts will stop it running and the individual cylinders will cause a misfire/dead cylinder. You can solder the terminals back on using some aluminium solder and a very hot soldering iron. Don't breathe the gas, I did and felt sick as a dog - something to do with having Hydrochloric acid for flux :-(

As already mentioned, if you're using a series 1 you're on borrowed time anyway.

Ben Wagg may have an up to date price as he's just ordered one.

Cheers!

You can take the PTU off in 10 minutes and do the diagnostic tests in the service manual (its online somewhere, look in the links page on this site). All you need is a multimeter. I did this with mine and noticed that sometimes pin 5 didn't have any output, sometimes it did. It confirmed it was knackered to me

Well looking at the stats and my service history. I still have the original PTu and the car's done about 70k Miles now so, if it's not that that is the problem I'm sure it will creep up sometime soon, so I have decided I'm going to get a new one.

But I am in luck as a friend who used to own a Z has one he has never fitted (still in the box with all the mount frames wires and screws - Post '93 model) so I'm gonna take that off his hands. He only wants £30 for it. I know he's a friend but I'm not going to tell him to charge me more now am I ???.

Thanks to all of you who have offered to lend me their PTU. It's good to have friends when your 300zx goes wrong and I really appreciate it. Thanks again.

Are there any good friends out there who can lend me an engine and gearbox? ;)

You can borrow mine mate for those posing sessions arround Harrogate of a weekend. But I need them back for the summer! ROFL :D

I had a new PTU fitted at Fiddlehurst yonks ago and it wasn't the updated version.

I paid about 270 squids I think, some on here have been quoted over 400 squids so shop around if you get one from Nelson in the UK. Go to Courtesy in the US if you can, for everything! LOL :D ;)

Differences are one is made by Hitachi and the other by Mitsibushi, have a gander on TT.net at the Courtesy Nissan fiche. Get the part numbers from there. ;)
