Just looked at a nice Zed with a view to purchase. Front L/H shocker mount has some corrosion , not through, but enough worry me.

Is this aexpensive to have welded, or more complicated than it seems?

Featured Replies

If it needs welding. I would not trust any car where the shocker mount needs welding. Mine had a little rust on the mount when I get it. Wire brush, and some paint did the job.

But the rust on the Z you are looking at maybe worse

Personally I've never seen a Z32 with any significant rust, not even the approx 10 year old, non-undersealed imports (like mine). The fact that this car has some rust may be a bad sign. I would have a VERY close look around the rest of it, especially the bits that are hidden and have the opportunity of getting and staying damp, such as in the boot - down the back of the wheel arches, under the carpets, the sills etc.

As others have said, corrosion is rare. Most likely reason is accident damage. If it's otherwise a great buy then have it checked out by AA / RAC or similar. If it's a dealer buy, you may well save money - if the inspection finds something important / safety related, it would ruin their reputation to not do this at no cost. I saved hundreds of pounds using an inspection.

I asked how much a RAC inspection would be on a ZX. £325, and they need the car all day. Everything gets checked. Compression, turbos, every electrical cable.

I must admit, that may seem steep but if they do compression checks etc. that is good.

My Bro had an inspection on his GTA Alpine V6, basic jobby, about £100 but didn't help him one bit. In fact, gonna put up a post about this to help others...

But that does sound like a good deal to me!

Simple thing is walk away if something does`n feel right go with your first instinct most times it will be right, you were obviously worried enough to post about the rust? also there is a good Zed out there keep looking.Personally I looked at upward of 20 Zeds when I bought my first 3 years ago and that WAS hard work more recently i checked 10 out before traveling around 900 round trip to Scotland to buy...get this the cheapest one but the best one ? weird or what ..dealers stink don`t trust em. I recently fitted a cctv system in a dealer showroom and forecourt so was around before customers arrived whilst the customers where there then after they left and the conversations I heared were virtually fraud! the dealers shit on you every time buy private but take a Zed guy with you

I think I better lie down now !

sorry to lecture but I hate it when the bad guys win .

I can sort of second that.

I have not looked at many zeds since the unfortunate incident with a white TT and my bloody bank loan frown.gif - but, I agree with what Jeff says, you sort of get a weird feeling that says no, crap car. Can't explain it, most zeds LOOK pukka. I think you just get the negative feeling, walk away (some advice coming from me!) It's mainly the person selling the car and not the car itself, ask him complicated questions about knock sensors and safety boost. Ask him about propshaft bearings and aircon/heater matrixes, ask about turbo timers and synthetic oil, ask about synchros' on manuals and dodgy autos on early 89's and 90's, ask about HICAS and ECU diagnostic codes.

I have NOT gone to look at around 25 zeds just because the guy on the end of the phone didn't convince me. Saved me no end of messing around, and as Jeff says there are loads od sheds out there and a few niceys.

Just keep going until you find her.

Weird really, I am sorta giving myself this advice too!!! because I would swap the seven large in my bank TOMORROW for a decent zed. Just cant seem to find what I want (Red, TT, Manual, Leather, Pukka)

It's there somewhere smile.gif

Rant over.

Bloody Monday mornings smile.gif

Glen.

Is it me or do imports seem to fair better/ I am probably biased as I have owned 2 x imports but when looking especially at dealers the UK models are always the worse condition. Having said that I looked 2 months ago at a L reg 100k miler in black import big exhaust wheels leather etc at a dealer in B.HAM My god when I opened the bonnet it was a complete shed!!! oil and crap all over wait for it price £7500!

It was well dodgy I am convinced it was older than the reg. forgot to check seat belt date but walk away I did very quickly and din not look back ( turn to stone don`t you if you do?) The said dealer in my previous post who I fitted CCTV for i have fopund out did time for ringing cars !! now he is selling cars from a respectable pitch!!

dont trust dealers!!! Jeff TT

ps private sales can be dodgy too.

I think the UK is a harsher climate for cars due to the amount of salt on the roads.

Japan is typically hot, humid and frequently rainy but with no salt. I believe that volcanic ash rather than salt is used in New Zealand and there cars last much longer too.

Time for a suggestion for a new section on the forum:-

If anyone spots/or knows of a decent Z for sale, they post details of where, when and how much etc. Might work but depends on the members......
