Evening everyone,

so after a great year with the Zed, it’s decided to develop some faults just as I’m about to put it away for winter.

The Hicas bushes are worn, causing the rear near side wheel to wobble, the alternator now only works when driving and stops at traffic lights but the main concern is that cylinder 5 isn’t firing.

Its 1993 twin turbo, I’m not the most technically minded but would like to do some investigation in to the fault before I give in and take it to a garage.

Any pointers or advice?

Hey Rob,

HICAS ball joints are an easy fix; not expensive to buy, although the inners are harder to replace than the outers. Just get a proper 4 wheel alignment done afterwards, to ensure everything is set-up properly. Have both sides checked and preferably replace in pairs, otherwise you'll be getting it done again next year ?

Alternator - again, not a major job to replace the failed unit.....

As for cylinder 5, it may be something simple like an injector or spark plug connector - disconnect both, clean them up and replace. It's not uncommon for the metal connections to become corroded after 25+ years!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Cheers Rich, I took it to the garage to get it aligned which is how he found it in the first place. Both side wobble but the near side is a lot worse but I’ll absolutely get both done at the same time.

I hope the issue is a straight forward one to repair, I’ve not done any engine work yet, is it a plenum off job to get to the injectors and spark plug connectors?

You can check if the injector is not working by placing a long screw driver on the injector cap to hear it clicking.

I replaced one some while back & I had to dremel the plenum to get at the screw.

There is a write up on it. search Injector replacement without removing the plenum.

also can be found on twin turbo.net

I had same problem with number 6, took it to Nissan agent, had it for two days then said could not find problem !

brought it back home ,  did what Arthur suggested with big screwdriver found no clicking, then checked wiring plug for voltage with meter, No volts there, next went to ECU under passenger footwell swapped ECU for spare and hey presto worked fine. All 6 injectors are fed from this engine ECU.

hope you get sorted.

It’s definitely not the coil pack.

I swapped it with the pack from Cylinder 1 and the misfire continued on cylinder 5.

Oddly, when I first started the car from cold (and a dead battery) it ran on all 6 for about 30-60 seconds.

The PTU is a series 1 and has been relocated behind the passenger headlight and has a lot of electrical tape wrapped around the wiring.

I think my next step is to carefully unwrap the tape, check the wiring and all the connections too.

Any other advice would be welcome
