Dave, do you live in a rough area or what? How often do you need to physically defend yourself? Martial arts may be good in a one-on-one or a two-on-one situation, but unless you are very very very experienced you will get a pasting while you try to think about and then get your 'attack' move together.

Much better going to the track and practice your RUNNING skills than going toe to toe. Not heroic I know, but then you can always go back later and get them one-on-one with a baseball bat!:D

Ahh the old "baseball Bat' ploy! :D:D

I don't do martial arts.;)

No, I don't live in a rough area, so self-defence is not a prime reason for weight training. The other reasons mentioned above are far greater. I don't actually like fighting, but I like taking sh** of nobheads even less ;) I'm not saying I thump everyone who does me a bad turn, but being able to assert oneself knowing you can back it up physically if necessary is NICE ;) Violence is a last resort when other avenues are not open to you.

Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.

It is the law of love that rules mankind. Had violence, i.e. hate, ruled us we should have become extinct long ago. And yet, the tragedy of it is that the so-called civilized men and nations conduct themselves as if the basis of society was violence.

Ghandi liberated an entire subcontinent without swatting a fly.

Ghandi liberated an entire subcontinent without swatting a fly. [/b]

Yes, but how many have died at the hands of evil ?

I agree with your point, but SOMETIMES it's you or them. I agree that violence escalates, and does not really solve any problems, but there has to be a conquering of minds to make others see things the peaceful way; and that is frequently not possible. Ghandi had a position of power, so while he advocated peace, he had power - just not violent power. If you don't mind being a victim/martyr for others with lesser braims, then by all means be a pacifist.

If good men didn't take a stand against evil/lesser people, there would be no good people. That we HAVE progressed is partly due to a willingness to fight for freedom (you've seen Spartacus !!;) :D )

To take a different slant, "all that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing". I take your point.

I think the Asimov quote (last resort of the incompetent) is closest to what I feel. WW2 (to take a historical example so as not to start a fight - hopefully) was necessary to liberate the world of the evils of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.

But there were so many wrong decisions taken by all sides in the lead up to the war - millions would have been spared had a few of these been right.

In my conscience, I should allow myself to be killed rather than inflict violence on another. But would I have the strength of commitment to do so? I doubt it.

Still, none of us are perfect eh?

And a last Ghandi quotation. He was asked "what do you think of Western Civilization?"

He replied: "I think it would be a good idea." :D

Cheers - Gio

Did Ghandi have any theories on MASS?

Of course - he believed in mass resistance and mass civil disobedience! hahahahaha :D

I threw "Ghandi" and "mass" at google and came up with loads of stuff including a speech from Nelson Mandela so that neatly closes the loop ;)

Today as we strive to achieve a date for the first democratic elections in this country, the legacy of Gandhiji has an immediate relevance. He negotiated in good faith and without bitterness. But when the oppressor reneged he returned to mass resistance. He combined negotiation and mass action and illustrated that the end result through either means was effective. Gandhi is most revered for his commitment to non-violence and the Congress Movement was strongly influenced by this Gandhian philosophy, it was a philosophy that achieved the mobilisation of millions of South Africans during the 1952 defiance campaign, which established the ANC as a mass based organisation.

I reckon nelsons making himself into he-man, and when he's finished he's gonna track me, warren and anyone else who has upset him and beat them into submission!!!:D :D :D

its not about the ammount of power you have its about the way you use that power. Its also about your mind, if you tell your self you cna do something you are 50% on the way. I surprise people sometimes because i don't look as strong as I "think".

Bruce lee new the imporntance of speed and accuracy, he also had a very sharp mind which he spent time training.

you can increase your overall strength a lot in a few weeks as well just by teaching the muscle you do have to work correctly, you also loose this strength quickly.

I don't think a man who can dead lift 310kg needs to be told how to get stronger though :)

Personally I just want to look bigger, I have had psychological weight problems since i was about 8 and now I am just a bit obsessed, my daily life prevents an ordered food intake though, something i am working on greatly.

I agree with Mike 100%, similar story to mine, in all honesty I started training, purely out of vanity. It attracts the opposite sex!

Actually the same can be said of the cars we drive:)

Now Im a bit older and wiser, it helps dealing with clients and bullying people in Board meetings!

Anyway, Im going to have a piece of sterile mesh ( I wonder if PPS can do it cheaper?) inserted to keep my inards intact! Apparently I can have it done on a Friday and be back in the gym on Monday! Its a permanent repair and is stronger than before, which means next time Im going for 320 Kilos!:D

It wouldn't be the first time something resembling a length of intestine came out of there! ;) LOL

This is true, Im full of Sh1t!

Roy just how large are you? when empty and not full of shit????????????

This all reminds me of a time when i used to compete in Judo ,many moons ago now, our instructor said i neededto improve my general strength. So i started going to a gym that taught weight training, this guy had me on a squat machine ,a real old type not like the new things of today ,basically it was a frame that the weights slid onto and was connected at each end by 2 poles from floor to ceiling and would not go all the way to the floor only to about 18" off the floor. The problem was,for me , is that this type of machine is very strict in the way it makes you push at a strange angle through the squat motion as it will only go up in a perfectly straight line...the result for me was i strained so much that i had a headache for 3 weeks as the muscles in my neck went into spasms Ha! Ha! i did'nt even know i had muscles there anyway after that i decided to forget strength and developed my natural perpensity towards speed which stood me in much better steed in competions as i am a lightweight...well back then now i,m more of a pear shape Oh dear.family life!

I agree - the irony of WW2 was that British people had money in arms manufactures like Krupps. The tradegy is we are still doing the same - arming other countries. We also, IMHO should have bombed the arms/munitions factories in Germany from day one. As usual, leaders were thinking of other things than human lives.

Most wars are avoidable, but once the situation has been setup, there's no going back.

I don't hate you - I even don't feel emnity towards Warren !!

I have CALMED down; this is the NEW, much-improved Nelson !! ;) :D

Nelson, improving your self is excellent if is what you want to do. But just remeber the bigger they are the harder they fall. And a good swift kick in the balls will not help you to defend your self in any situation.

Hugs and kisses

Wendy:D :D
