Afternoon legends,

So I’m not overly technically minded but I’m trying to learn!

I have an issue with my fan on start up.

I start the car and I get 2-4 seconds of light belt squeak which stops the second the fan kicks in. As far as I’m aware, the fan should kick in immediately on start up, right?

I want to have a go at fixing myself so looking for advice on what the cause is and how to fix

cheers

PFA

It's really just a matter of tightening the tensioner. Iirc 12mm. However, getting to it all is a bit of a bugger. Mine does the same, need to change all my belts. Will do it when I change the rad. Unless someone comes along with a hack and says it's piss easy lol!

Your viscous coupling cooling fan should run as soon as the engine starts. When cool it is free wheeling slightly and locks up when hot.

Belt squeel on start up is nearly always the auxilary belt driving the alternator and water pump. When you first start the car the alternator has to

work hard to restore the battery charge and the belt can slip with the load. Newly replaced belts can stretch a bit as they settle in.

This is the FSM page for adjusting the belts:

When I had my belts replaced, I remember this happened to me. They were tightened up again soon after and the squeak never returned.

I think its just that the belts are tight when new and then with a bit of heat cycling they must stretch a little and need adjustment.

The PS pump can drip down to the belts and cause slip, have a look but a tighten is likely the solution. I have underdrive pulleys and mine will squeak now and again, usually when there’s an audience.
