Hi All,

After my respray having been completed, I’m eager to get my front end covered with paint protection film, as my car will be no garage queen, it will be used a lot over the summer months.

As far as I’m aware, PPF is CAD designed for each model of car - well for common cars anyway. The film is then printed in that shape to then be applied directly to the vehicle. For uncommon cars such as ours, I believe the companies cut the film to shape on your car. I will absolutely not have someone cutting a film on my paintwork! as I’m worried the process will nick the paint.

Has anybody applied PPF to their cars and if so would there be a file saved with your supplier so they can pre-make the shapes for my car? If not, have you heard of PPF being cut to a cars shape successfully without damaging the paint?

Thanks in advance.

As long as you go with a reputable company, you won't have any issues. I had my F-Type PPF'd twice (long story) but the first company used supplier provided templates and you could tell as the edges were quite visible in places. The second company custom cut some panels and it was impossible to tell it had been covered.

Also the ones worth your time will remove bumpers and lights etc to get the wrap around the edges and out of sight. Obviously this is the platinum service and you should expect to pay as such.

Also worth noting that before they PPF, they will likely detail the car (additional cost to you) as they would not warranty the PPF work otherwise. I went with the standard detail + ceramic coat + suntech PPF and the car looked like a mirror (it was black).

Well that’s a relief! Thanks so much for this feedback, seems to be opposite to what I was told. Would you mind sharing the company you used and roughly how much you paid for that service on your F-Type? I noticed from some posts you live near Andrew - I’m from Brighton n Hove so not
far from you guys. I’d probably check out the company you used and consider using them. Removing bumpers etc for a nice clean fit sounds ideal to me [emoji846].

No worries at all. I'm no expert but just speaking from my own experience. And to clear any confusion, I didn't go for the remove bumper service as the guys I used didn't even offer it. A little out of my budget bracket!

The first guys I used was Dub Customs out in Essex. From what I see on social media, they have come a long way so I expect they do a very tidy job nowadays.

The second guy I used was Andrew @ Bellissimoto in Borough. He has an absolutely gorgeous setup and works on some stunning cars. He's also on socials (IG mainly).

I live about 2mins away from Andrew so yes, relatively local to you! Would be great to meet up once the weather and schedule improve!

That’s great, cheers for that, gives me somewhere to start. I’m sure I’ve heard of Bellisimoto actually - just looked him up and wow yeah he does some fantastic work. Now let’s see what I can afford [emoji51].

Yep definitely need to do a meet up over summer. Tom (TheRealNips) lives down South as well, so we should all do a meet up once I get my car back in early August. Look forward to seeing your beautiful Z in person.

I have PPF on my Aston Martin, companies such a Topaz can produce CAD templates for your car, smaller companies will either buy templates or cut on the car. Not sure where you're based, but go to Topaz or similar (they have sites in West London and Bristol).

Yep you need something to protect the paint i guess my journey home from bodyshop and i had stone chips ?‍♂️and you should see it now

this is why it would kill me to have a 15k repaint as i drive my zed and yes sometimes i drive it hard ? but like i keep sayings it will never be a show car and i/jimmer never built it for that reason its just a black beast fast as f..k  and that’s what i wanted  ?

Thanks for that - will check them out. I’m down in sunny Brighton so only hour away from London - will check these guys out. My cars at jimmers until end of July so may even chat to their Bristol branch. Your Aston looks beautiful btw - one of my favourites along with the DB9 and Vanquish.

I guess I’m greedy, wanting a beautiful beast haha. Stone chips p*ss me right off and after a lifetime of having average paint, I thought this is the one to make perfect ?. I’ll be driving mine like you, a lot and too fast ?. Anyway hopefully PPF is the answer to keeping it in good nick.

I can't believe how cheap DB9s have got now. They reached the bottom of their depreciation curve a few years ago.

Early DB9s do have some issues sadly which have affected their values, catalyst ingestion and V12 'tick' cost huge amounts to put right, something thankfully V8 Vantage doesn't suffer from, V12 Vantage doesn't either as the design issues on early V12 engines were put right apart from cat ingestion on the primaries.

My Vantage Roadster seems to have held its value better, there are much fewer Vantage Roadsters that hard tops and their values hold up a bit better. I paid £37k for it which was a premium at the time as went for the best example of the early version that I could find and I bought it through a supercar dealership and it hasn't lost anything since, good examples of early Roadsters are worth high 30s/low40s still and general values are increasing. It's got some very expensive 'lightweight' option wheels on it which were a £12k-£15k option from AM and as dealer fit - it's an all-options-ticked car with the exception of the Premium sound system.

Must have been the covid inflation of pretty much all cars, especially decent cars, that helped push the prices up from the bottom of the curve. That is so cheap for what you get, granted it will have pricey early model problems. Love the shape of this era Astons. Don’t like any of the new stuff - they’re all AMG based nowadays I believe? Nothing wrong with AMG, just not very Aston Martin like!

Smart move buying the best example you can get! I tend to do that with my cars too and always pays off.

Been so damn busy the last couple of weeks, I didn't have the chance to contact anybody. I've just emailed a brief and photos to both Topaz Detailing and Bellissimoto, so let's see how the quotes stack up. I've asked for a full front end PPF and ceramic coating the full car. I may ceramic coat it myself depending on the quotes. Will update either on this post or the project thread, once I've heard back and made a decision.

Thanks for your input guys ?
